The more I read about Chris' life, the more it dawned on me how little I knew of the man behind the musician. He had a lifelong struggle with depression and drug addiction and was deeply affected by his parent's divorce. His lyrics reflected his battle scars and inner wounds, but I foolishly thought that at 53, he had conquered his demons. How wrong I was. In one interview, Chris admitted that he would randomly open windows to see if he would jump out. Who the eff does that??? One can put on a brave face to hide the torment. One can slap on a smile and fool the world. The Dark never leaves and can live quietly for years in the corner of a person's psyche. But on some random, vulnerable day, The Dark appears and swallows that person whole without warning, leaving a trail of tears and sorrow for those left behind. RIP, Chris. You were a warrior poet for a generation of broken souls.

This song makes me think of the patients I work with as a palliative/end of life care social worker. I think of not only the patients who are adults who are now non-verbal, have memory loss or other end-of-life complications but also parents who have lost their children too. I've worked with both demographics and I've seen it first hand, what the loneliness of waiting. I think of my first patient most prominently, the 95-year old man in assisted living who was married for more than 75 years before his wife passed away two years before and his son passed some years before--no friends left or relatives for company--just waiting, willing and ready, but still here. I was happy for him when I received news of his passing because he was finally without that loneliness and immense grief.

The lyrics speak of someone reflecting on their life, waiting for something (perhaps salvation or peace), and feeling as though they’re waiting in solitude. Many fans have speculated that the song touches on Cornell's own personal struggles, such as his inner demons, thoughts about the afterlife, and longing for meaning in the face of death. While Cornell never explicitly said the song was autobiographical, the themes of existential longing and searching for redemption resonate with his later personal challenges. The song took on even deeper meaning for many listeners, as it now seems to reflect his introspective journey toward understanding life and death. Especially after he left us. Man, I miss this dude. I am just happy he left us with so much music but saddened for what could have been.

One of the best songs he ever wrote. Your a fucking lyrical genius . Love and pain in your heart and still what took him was sadness . I love this song and always will . The only rocker with a 4 octave range in his voice. RIP CHRIS CORNELL. I HOPE THAT YOU FOUND SOME HAPPINESS IN THE AFTERLIFE. SEE YOU SOMEDAY SOON
@katarzynab946 Жыл бұрын
Not only him having 4 octaves, also Layne Staley, and I think both have great voices, all big 4 of grunge had amazing vocalists.

3 years to the day. Shame that it had to happen. Being a high schooler and a metalhead, I can say there has been too much tragedy and loss amongst those that paved the road in which I keep connected through. Randy, Dime, Cliff, Bon, Layne, Kurt, and but not only Chris C

wow..sure is a lot of negative comments. I havent listened to long prob about 2 years or so i forget. Listening to him and his band which are all really great people they got me through one of the most difficult times of my life. Yes pretty much when your soul dies but your still living. Thank you guys!!! If he isnt himself here it maybe because he is to going through something of his own. Prob from his wife..smh..it may be that he too has come close to the broken soul amd realizes that at this moment this song may come to truth. Who knows though..Anyway..Just totaly awesome guys. We all cant be rockstars everyday of our life and be happy shining people. Now can we???
