Sarah was perfect for the part. The other actresses are fantastic in their own right but this role was made for Sarah - that innocent and cute naivety was something the other actresses just didn't have.

It's kind of sad to look down at the comments, and see people praising one actress while bashing the other(s). I just want to say now that I think all of the actresses did FANTASTICALLY. In my opinion, the casting choice wasn't a matter of talent (since all of the women are very talented); it was a matter of character essence, for they each portrayed the character different ways. Emilia portrayed her as an insightful, and strong-willed young woman. Claire portrayed her as an Elizabeth Bennet type; clever, cunning, and practical. And although Sarah's audition portrayal had more terseness than her on-screen portrayal, her doe-eyed nature and high voice gave her a sense of naivety. I agree with their decision to choose Sarah, since she already had the aura of innocence that was necessary for the role. Emilia and Claire were great. They were believable and enticing, but their auras were that of strong women, not starry-eyed youths.

Her understated performance also matches the general social convention of that time, that expected women to suppress their emotions.

Here's my opinion. Amelia Clark was great in capturing the impulsive nature and changeable emotional state and mind of Elizabeth. In the part when she says "You are a liar! Can't you see? He would never touch you!" I love how she brings out some spite, because it is possible for Elizabeth to have reacted like that because she could have been deep inside a bit jealous of Dido, who got engaged because of her fortune despite her origins. Claire Foy became much more spiteful and aggressive. That's interesting from one point of view: sometimes people with weak personalities like Elizabeth hide their weakness behind aggression. But on the other side, I think the role calls for some signs of vulnerability and blind trust to Dido, which she didn't really let out. She was a bit cold and stiff towards Dido, as if she was truly talking to a male like the one who read the part for the audition. It looks as if the personality of the role must be slightly altered to fit her style but without a doubt she has great potential and much talent. Sarah Gadon did much better in the movie than in her audition. That sudden "Do you, Dido?" seemed to come out of nowhere and I much preferred the way she said "You are illegitimate!" in the film, as if she wanted to relieve herself from some kind of weight. But apart from that, she expressed better than any of the two previous actresses the naivete of Elizabeth, she seemed much more open to Dido and she spoke more with her face. I think that is why they went for her ultimately. I'm not an actress or a director, just a person who likes movies, especially period ones, and I like to share opinions on them with other people. Have a nice day :)
