I think they have similar low ends to be honest. Its just the "click" you get from the e602 kind of distracts us from the low end. Ignore the click and you will see the low end is there. Both great mics, if you want pure low end boom D6, if you want low end boom and more click e602. I did a little test and one thing I noticed is with the 602 if anything is rattling on your petals or near the kick it will pick it up yet the D6 does not hear it. Something to consider.
@ryanshook82842 жыл бұрын
I disagree. The low end bump on the sennheiser is lower and more focused in its frequency. This simultaneously helps exaggerate the click. The freq plot is one thing and affects everything you are hearing. Maybe I’m saying the same thing as you but just thinking of it quite differently. But the freq is one cohesive thing.
@ZilnichProductions Жыл бұрын
Just started recording drums on a new song and thought the 602 would be the one but after tests the D6 sat better in the mix and didn't fight with the bass guitar as much down low. So no matter what sounds better solo its in the mix that matters.
@sanctumdefile86216 жыл бұрын
The D6 sounds good but the 602 picks up lower frequencies and has a brighter top end. You have to have a playback system that will get down to 20 hz to hear this. On systems that are not that good, the D6 seems like it has more bass, but it doesn't. It has more bass in the upper bass frequencies. Also, if you can't identify what frequencies you are hearing in the low end, you will pick the D6. I like the super low end of the 602. The D6 sounds fine but I would cut 80-160hz out of it. But, of course, it depends on the genre of music you are recording. In the end, I think the 602 has more versatility with less eq.

This is interesting. The better the listening device, the more depth, low end and punch the e602 II exhibits. When I listen on PC speakers or run off the mill in-ears the D6 sounds massive, when I listen on good studio headphones the e602 II starts having more low end than the D6. On my audiophile stereo the e602 II has significantly more low end and thump. So, as others mentioned before, it really depends on what you are listening on. Making an argument that most people listen on in-ears is not a great argument, though. I agree that you want to cater to the listener's taste, but you can always boost the mid-lows on the e602 II. However, you cannot "add" non-existing low-end on the D6. What I did find curious is that the D6 seemed to have more decay than the e602 II making it sound a bit more natural in that regard. And, while I am all for a dry kick sound, the argument for me would be similar: If the drum has more sustain, then I would like to have that accurately reflected in the raw recording. I can manipulate that later if I want it to be shorter. Not having captured the sustain in the original does not allow me to "add" it later. All that said, the e602 II certainly has a more balanced tone and reaches deeper into the low end. I would prefer it over the D6. Super Comparison Maruis! Vielen Dank- hat mir sehr geholfen mit meiner Entscheidung das Sennheiser mic kit zu waehlen.

it's interesting. just compare the response curve supplied from the manufacturer. very easy to see that the e602 has a way more pronounced low frequency boost . if you have good headphones or well tuned studio monitors, very easy to hear as well. it is interesting though, because most people do not have well tuned speakers that can reproduce frequencies evenly. it makes sense that a lot of people would hear more lows in the audix. I have both mics - the e602 def has deeper lows.
@bassplayedslow30004 жыл бұрын
Casey Kittel you’re right. The e602 does have a deeper lows, but most people aren’t listening on sound systems that are going to accurately produce those. If most people are hearing deeper lows on the Audix you want to please most people with your recordings. A lot of people like the Beta 52a for this reason too. I will say the e602 is amazing for live music applications.

They are very similar. Both have the top end hyped up and the mids cut out which seems to be the thing to do with kick drum mics these days. You can get what you want out of either of these mics I think. I had a D6 which got lost somewhere in the process of moving and re-setting up my room. I had to replace it so I got the e602 just to try something different. I'm equally as happy with it as I was with the D6 I think. I don't love either of them, but I like them both. Someday, maybe the D6 will re-appear and I'll be able to compare side/side

e602 inside, near the batter head. The D6 was nice too, but the e602 had more punch and overall tonal coverage from what I heard on OK but not very high end headphones. I have a D112 on a May mic isolation mount inside my 22" DW maple bass drum currently. I have used both e602's and e602 II's inside and outside of a 20" DW maple bass drum and a 20" Yamaha Stage Custom Birch bass drum. Sounded amazing inside the DW, great punch and low end. Sounded great but not as good inside the Yamaha. I have an e602 II on a May mount inside my 16" DW maple floor tom, but I do not often use that drum with my set. I have Audix D4's inside all of the other toms, 8,10,12,14. I have an Audix D6 now and was going to also install it in the 22" maple DW bass drum, with the mount attached on the opposite side as the D112. So I could either run both, or select the best between the two for the specific gig or recording. Now I am wondering if I should instead use the e602 II. Installing all 3 would just be insane...Hmmmm...lol

Hard to beat that D6. Have used it for years live micing kick drum where it is perfectly suited. Lower mids are naturally scooped out so it processes quickly and easily at the board. Sorry, the e602 was too clicky in upper mids and not enough bottom end. Actually sounded surprisingly tinny in this review. I am listening through studio speakers.
@Assimilator7024 жыл бұрын
Starman57 Use a good pair of in ears with a dynamic driver. The e602 has more bottom end than the D6 which has more upper bass boost.
@starman57544 жыл бұрын
@@Assimilator702 Don't need to, my studio monitors see it all. Read my post again. The e602 low bottom is usually just unusable flab that will be cut out anyway. Kick drum fundamentals live in the 65-85 hz range. Anything below that is garbage.
@nickcrane83293 жыл бұрын
@@starman5754 That also depends on what kind of music you're trying to record, for metal that high end really helps the kick cut through the fast low tuned guitars and bass which are already using a lot of low end energy. I'd probably end up putting a high shelf on the d6 where with the 602 I wouldn't need to

Great video, Marius. I have one question though: which bass drum head were you using here? Head choice makes a big difference when comparing how one mic sounds against another. If you were to change the drum head, it would have a huge influence on the sound we are hearing from the mics. Thanks!

@@thedubi7 I know alot of guys who love the D6 on floor toms. I just can't get on with it. I like my D6 in a kick fine (with the right placement) but find that smaller diaphragm mics like the D6, with their scoop shaping, cannot hold a candle to a larger head. For instance, I have a Mondo which the D6 destroys in a kick drum but the exact opposite happens on a floor tom. D6 is scooped, unnatural+unable to grab frequencies in a 16 inch drum where the Mondo gravitates towards exploiting those frequencies and make the drum sound absolutely gigantic. Really unimpressive on 20 or 22 kicks imo though
