I met her once when she came to the university near me to speak. She was very approachable and real.

oh that's wonderful, what year was this and do you remember what she spoke about?
@jamberry80267 жыл бұрын
I spoke with her after her speaking engagement at the house of one of my professors. She mainly spoke about Dr. Davis and how the media was portraying her as a terrorist when in fact the government allowed white terrorist groups to threaten her for her political beliefs, and it's the reason she bought and owned guns in the first place. If I remember right I think the year was 1976. Dr. Davis spoke at the University that same year. I live in a red state and I do believe Dr. Davis was somewhat disappointed with the Black activists in our state as I am. Her main focus was on the two political prisoners Ed Poindexter and David Rice who were framed by the FBI under cointelpro at the time. You can google them if you are interested in more information about them. David Rice AKA Mando Langa passed away last year.

Audre Lorde's visit to our state was funded by the Women's study group of the University Of Nebraska. This is when I learned that many white feminists are racist and I did not continue my association with them. Not all of them were racist, but I never saw the ones who were cool with me call them out on their racism. As I think back on my visit with Audre Lorde I think she also knew what was going on there.

Wow....I've been searching for years for Audre's speeches, interviews, anything, and I'm so happy to hear her here!! Not nearly as much as I think her voice warrants!! Many thanks for sharing this with us all!

As someone who has taken calls at listener-sponsored Pacifica stations (this show is on Pacifica station WBAI). I feel I have something to offer here. Generally speaking, Pacifica stations almost never screen callers like might happen on commercial radio. Disappointingly, it's still true that 75% of the time, even on feminist shows, the callers are male. You heard Audrey ask for more women to call in, it reminded me how often I've heard hosts or guests make that request. Also, how many black people called in? It wasn't always easy to tell, but I wish there were more. Unfortunately, to this day white men, even so-called progressive white men, are conditioned to think that their thoughts are genius and they feel competitive, like if they don't express they will fall behind.

I just watched an interview where the author talked about his book Of Boys to Men, how boys are falling behind but girls and women are making all these strides. It’s this intellectual approach often taken that’s really another way they try to strengthen patriarchy. This round about way to sound an alarm that women are making strides and it’s gone to far.

Loved this listen...the format, the women, the articulate candor. Grateful for their voices. Pondering what I could call in and ask, it would have to be a curiosity of their experience. Why waste time questioning it rather than trying to find out about it?

Re-listening to this interview 3yrs later (2021)and hearing loud and clear the cognitive dissonance of several callers who were so overwhelmed by the power of this black women centered discussion, that they felt it necessary to absolve themselves of their discomfort by consistently denying both women's experiences. It was almost unbearable to listen to.

The need those callers had to make it about them, blame the host and guest speaker and be condescending by gaslighting was vile.

Just ran across this last night. Profound! Would have loved for Jane Elliott (white woman educator known for her "Blue eyes/Brown eyes exercise in 1968) had been in the midst of this exchange, especially at that time. She would have squashed the white male madness with a good tongue lashing! But then, ignorance and fear bears down even harder when challenged intellectually. Boy, do we have a plethora of that in the world.

The hegemonic white perspective has been using the same talking points for almost 50 years, you'd think the grift would be obvious by now but it's the same narrative tucker carlson is spewing today, ridiculous.

Whew I am hearing all of this. The same audacity continues to add an air of toxicity to all conversations
