Amélie - The Musical
Monday 12 - Saturday 17 August 2019
Pavilion Theatre, Bournemouth
Amélie - a story of an astonishing young woman who lives quietly in the world, but loudly in her mind. She secretly improvises small, but extraordinary acts of kindness that bring happiness to those around her. But when a chance at love comes her way, Amélie realises that to find her own contentment she’ll have to risk everything and say what’s in her heart.
Amélie, played by the delightful Audrey Brisson of The Elephantom, Pinocchio and Pericles (National Theatre), The Grinning Man (Bristol Old Vic) and more, is a new musical based on the much loved five-time Oscar®-nominated film, and an ‘enchanting act of theatrical reinvention ’ - The Los Angeles Times.

Same, I thought she was talking with her natural accent in the show. That only shows how tremendously talented she is. I sure hoped she could get an Olivier for this part. Alas you-know-what happened :(

Fun fact: Audrey was also in a Cirque Du Soleil show called Quidam.

Have to say (unpopular opinion) I think Audrey is better in the role than Phillipa Soo on Broadway, she fits the character far better, plus I never thought it made sense for Amelie to speak in an American accent.

I also think something similar in regard to Great Comet. I think Deneé Benton is a much better Natasha. In Soo's 'No One Else,' the emotions are large, but it's more dignified, more concrete. But Natasha is young, she's naive. I much prefer Deneé's interpretation of this young, very naive girl who just doesn't know what she wants because she barely knows who she is. That's Natasha. I think Philippa just has this mature air to her, and I think sometimes with certain characters that just doesn't work.

Even from just watching the trailers and listening to the cast recording, I can really sense her getting into the ins and outs of this character with far more depth than Phillipa Soo and Samantha Barks(nothing against them, they're both GREAT performers, but I always felt they were somewhat miscast in this role), and it seems so effective that I don't even feel the need to look back at Audery Tautou's performance in the film for comparison.
