This is really helpful!! I am doing a Little Shop Of Horrors cosplay this year, and this was the best video on making an Audrey ii puppet. Although, I wish you could’ve done a voiceover to explain what to get and what steps to do, were confused at first, but we got it. But thank you for this video! Helped a lot

This is the best tutorial that I've seen so far! I just have a couple questions. 1. How did you cut the head so there is space in the mouth? I understand the sharpie marks at 0:22 show the basic outline of where you cut the outside. Did you just estimate and guess the amount of space needed for in the mouth? 2. In the leaves of the stem, is there a sleeve? Or do you just stick your hand in? 3. When using modeling clay, I noticed that the thumb goes on the bottom half, and the middle three fingers go on the top half of audrey. Where does the pinky go? Other than that, you did a good job of documenting the process! This is the best video I could find!
@masonbarton
@masonbarton 4 жыл бұрын
so sorry I haven't replied. Just noticed I missed some comments. Yes I just hollowed out the head using a hot wire foam carver but you could try other tools. basically just left about an inch or so thickness everywhere. yes the stem is a green felt sleeve that I glued leaves onto. It is attached to the head of the plant as well. the thumb and pinky control the bottom half of the plant and the other fingers control the top and the tongue. Hope all this helps. thanks for the comment

Genius!!! Thank you for sharing your puppetry construction, and articulation skills to Make A2 come alive in front of our very eyes!! How would you maybe Rx to preserve the foam parts from degrading by use...It looks like you have maybe employed a bit of paper mache (at 1:10 in the video), tissue paper to stabilize the construction? Using the faux Amaranthus tendrils was genius! May I ask what is the hinge tape at the skull... perhaps linen art framing matting tape? please explain the faux hand construction...sorry, saw that in the bottom comments. May I humbly ask if you used a finishing spray? Love, LOve, LOVE!
@masonbarton
@masonbarton 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind comments. I did paper maché for a few reasons. 1 - I like that it makes all the added elements looks cohesive. 1 - I like the subtle wrinkles it does. 3 - It protects the foam and gives a better painting surface. Especially if you use spray paint as that would eat the foam. The hinge you are referring to is just extra green felt I just hot glued on. I did coat the eyes and teeth and inside the mouth with a high gloss varnish and the rest with a matte finish. As far as the hand and arm construction, maybe check my blog post about this. I posted more information there. amasonsayswhat.blogspot.com/2016/10/audrey-ii-from-little-shop-of-horrors.html

This is such a useful resource to making an Audrey II Puppet! Thank you so much for posting this! I’m planning to be Seymour for Halloween, so I want to get ready now :) I have a few questions about the process which I’d appreciate if you’d clarify: 1. Did the clay crack when drying? 2. Where did you purchase the leaves from? 3. Were there any difficulties in making the coat to put your arm through? 4. If you were ever to re-do this project again, what would you differently to make it better? I’d be over the moon if you responded, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to :)I plan on making a process video as well so any advice would be very helpful. More than anything else, just want to commend you on the outcome of the project- it’s great! Thank you so much again for the video 🤠
@masonbarton
@masonbarton 5 жыл бұрын
Good luck making yours. I hope it turns out amazing! The clay I used did not crack for me. I got the leaves and foliage from a Michaels craft store. Maybe Hobby Lobby as well. Tips when making the coat would be cut a small hole at first then make it bigger if needed. My jacket fitting was a total hack job. I made a fake arm out of packing tape. Theres tutorials about it. Basically cover your arm with clear wrap then packing tap on top of that. Cut it off of you and reattach where you cut. Then stuff with whatever. Do this in the bent arm position it will be in when holding the pot. Then I used more packing tape to sort or make a harness for the fake arm to attach to my shoulder. I hope that helps. I know its vague but like I said, it was a hack job. If I were to do this again I would come up with a better way to attach the fake arm to my body. I would also maybe make it so when the mouth is closed you don't see the teeth. Good luck! I would love to see how yours turns out.

awesome video! just a couple of questions 1. did you paper mache this puppet at all/what did you do to smooth out the exterior? 2. how did you make the stem/sleeve for this puppet?
@masonbarton
@masonbarton 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The exterior was already smooth from the mannequin foam head. I did not paper mache anything. I did lay down some tissue and glue/water mixture to cover all the stem detail on the head. I guess that could count as paper mache. The sleeve is just green fabric. I just made a long sleeve tube. Hot glued the seem instead of sewing and hot glued all the fake foliage to the sleeve. Hope this helps.

Hello Mason! The illusion is amazing! Would you share your tips for creating the "wrap around" hand portion?
@masonbarton
@masonbarton 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I bought a plastic fake hand at a halloween store and took a heat gun to it to mold it to better shape it to look like its holding the pot. then repainted it to my skin colors. I cut out a piece of the pot about halfway down to be able to put my bicep in. I made a strip of the green felt that attaches to the pot and loops over my bicep to the other side of the pot so that the pot basically is attached to that arm and I dont have to worry about holding it with my other hand. I put foam in the bottom half of the pot that my elbow rests on and covered with green felt. I got an old jacket and cut a hole in the front next to where the sleeve starts. Thats where your real arm comes out of. Then I saran wrapped my real arm and then package taped on top of that then cut it off my arm. I taped together where I cut and stuffed the fake arm with old grocery bags. I attached the fake hand at the end of the fake arm. Build a nice shoulder area that can sort of cup over your real shoulder. Then I made tape belts that wrapped around my body so the arm felt real secure to me and wouldn't just fall off. lol. I velcroed the fake hand to the pot but you could glue it even. Anyway, hope that helps. You inspired me to take some pics and I'll post them on my blog post about this. That may also help. I know others have asked as well. Thanks for reaching out.

The biggest problem was getting the teeth just right so that the mouth would mostly close. I used a dremmel to trim them down after they had hardened. Also a good technique to use a dremel for any other details. Also, the whole thing fits best on my hand and fingers. If I were to make it again, I would maybe figure out a better way to make it more universally fit everyone. Most people can work the mouth but can't get the tongue to stay on. Good luck. I'd love to see how yours turns out.

I've never heard of DAS before. How much did you use for the puppet?
@masonbarton
@masonbarton 3 жыл бұрын
Not much at all. Maybe half the block? I used it for the lips and the teeth. Takes some getting used to but it dries super hard and didn't crack or shrink on me. Wet your fingers to smooth it out. Good luck.

@@masonbarton Did you use the full styrofoam head, minus the neck, for the face? Using a similar bust and not sure if I should just cut it in half, or stop at the grin and go up.

@@silverpslm I used the entire head. I cut off the neck. Its basically cut in half. I also remembered that I used some of the DAS clay to sculpt around my fingers.

Quick question, just wondering how you attached the head to the stem of the plant. Did you just hot glue some leaves to it? That's all i can think to do... (I'm making one at the moment, and have almost finished, just got the stem left to do)
@masonbarton
@masonbarton 7 жыл бұрын
The stem is just a green fabric sleeve that I covered with leaves and such. Its attached to the head with just hot glue then covered with more leaves so none of the green fabric shows anywhere. Good luck finishing it. Would love to see the final product.

Mason Barton I finished it! How can I get a photo to you? I couldn’t get my hands on a foam head, so I used bits of old foam from under the house. In fact, almost the whole thing was made from scraps, or things I already had around the house. The only thing I bought was the leaves

basically paper mâché. I used a Elmers glue and water mixture then paper towels. This covers the entire thing allowing paint to go on better and I like the wrinkles and texture it gives it.

Paige Fell down 1:05-1:20 are the best views of how I did the finger holes. I sculpted them around my fingers with the clay. If I were to make this again I’m not sure I would do it this same way. So not much help sorry. Maybe think of something that works for you. Good luck. My pinky and thumb were sculpted to fit the bottom mouth piece while the three other fingers are used on the top piece.
