The way he starts crying at 4:59, holding himself in a guarded, helpless, almost self-protective stance, grasping his hair with one hand and hugging himself with his other, sobbing unevenly, losing control...was very well done. It's very accurate to how many men cry in real life.

In the book, when he says "my hope, my love, my life!" he buries his head in the seat of the sofa and begins sobbing uncontrollably. Without hesitation, Jane runs to his side and turns his cheek to kiss him before whispering "God keep you from harm and reward you for your kindness to me"... with Jane's inner monologue tearing itself apart over what to do, her morals conflicting with witnessing the love of her life breaking his heart before her. Jane Eyre is my second favourite novel after Wuthering Heights but no other including that has made me cry like that scene does in the book 😭😭😭😭😭 Charlotte Bronte's personal life must have been quite the journey.

@cellowali2865 Жыл бұрын
At first even I thought that his acting is bit over the top in this scene but then I read this particular conversation in the novel again and realised that it is quite a difficult scene to perform for an actor playing Rochester. Rochester is completely on the verge of being mad at this point. I can understand the changes in his mood as he is afraid of losing Jane forever. Plus you have to perform the scene as it is with Bronte's dialogues. In other versions either the dialogues are changed completely ( like in 2011 and 1970 version which gives an actor little bit ease to perform), or the scene is completely changed ( as in the case of 1996, 1997 , 2006). Even in 1973 BBC version which is considered more faithful, Michael jayston despite being a good Rochester doesn't fully convey the desperation and madness. So by far Mr. Dalton is the only actor who truly commits himself in performing the scene exactly like novel, yes he gets bit over the top in the end with that " you will", otherwise the whole scene is quite good.
@monmothma3358 Жыл бұрын

I think with this Rochester viewers are able to see a man who KNOWS he did something wrong and is trying to fix (I.e. guilt trip her into staying) that wrong. I also really like the height differences between the actors. I think that it adds to the story and makes Jane appear smaller to the wilder and taller Rochester.
@soulcornflake16 жыл бұрын
This is far more in keeping with Charlotte Bronte. In the novel Jane is tiny, which makes her will even more indomitable, and in this chapter, Rochester is very aware of what he's done wrong, but wants Jane to overlook it, making her decision all the more impressive.

For some reason I way prefer Clarke to Wasikowska. I know everyone says her performance lacks passion...I can see how she and Dalton are almost acting in different styles. But there’s something about Clarke in this that just seems rock-solid. She’s got an unbreakable core, and I feel that if I were a man like Rochester I could fall madly in love with her as he does. Wasikowska’s Jane gives me more of an impression of inner frailty, and that she’s figuring it out as she goes along, bewildered and overpowered at points. Which is perhaps more realistic. I just like the spirit of Clarke’s Jane more, I suppose.

I don't know why in gods name you're comparing Clark to Wasikowska of all individuals. I'm a huge fan of Jane Eyre and I was first introduced to it via the 2011 version at age 15. I loved the story but I always found it confusing as to why characters kept referring to Jane as a passionate individual. To this day; I have never come across of version of this story with a more seemingly passionless and spineless Jane Eyre than the character from the 2011 version. Wasikowska is a fine actress and gave a commendable performance in Jane Eyre; it just didn't capture the type of character of whom I suspect Miss Eyre was meant to be.

I always wondered what he expected her to do considering the laws and social norms of that day. What other choice did she have? What outcome was he expecting? Was she supposed to live with a legally married man? As a woman with no wealth (at that point in the book), it puts her in a dangerous and precarious situation. She has no claims to him at all. She would be left with nothing if he one day decided to leave (which he could do at any time, since they are actually not legally married). Not only that, but if he did leave or die, she would be ostracized in society and unable to find respectable employment - and employment opportunities were already almost nonexistent for women in those days. If he died, she would be entitled to nothing, as would his "illegitimate" children. Thornfield and all he owns would be entailed on some distant male relative when he died. Given that he was significantly older, the likelihood of him one day dying first and leaving her and his children with nothing was very high. I think Mr. Rochester is essentially a good man who was stumbling his way through a bad situation that his father and Bertha's family put him in when he was young, but this was definitely very selfish on his part. He could be insulated from ostracization and the consequences of living in "sin" because he was rich and male, so he controlled his own destiny no matter what people thought of him. And then to be able to have Jane, too, for as long as he lives? How cozy for him. But not so for Jane. What happens to her when he's gone?

I guess it’s a stylized version of what it might be like if we could really express our feelings...fully and unashamedly. Katherine Lucinda Grigori Snape To be fair Mr. Rochester is a melodramatic Byronic Hero with a barely self-restrained hot temper and somewhat wild mood swings in the book. He’s on the *lighter* end of the Byronic hero spectrum, so he’s better than most of them.?He’s not outright physically/sexually abusive of women, he’s generally got good intentions and something of a genuine conscience, and he actually earns the whole love redeems/atonement trope at the end of the novel, which is pretty rare for most of them. Still, he could be broody, controlling, moody, deceptive, borderline unhinged and occasionally a bit scary with his manic depressive mood swings, cowardly, a little overbearing, mildly narcissistic, emotionally manipulative of women, and somewhat of a fuckboy. He’s definitely more sympathetic, redemptive, and relatable than Frankenstein’s creature, Erik/the Phantom, Rhett Butler, and Heathcliff for a Byronic Hero, but definitely not an ideal love interest who you’d want to get involved with in real life either. I think Timothy Dalton gets Rochester pretty perfectly.
@cindyknudson27153 жыл бұрын
Too passionate? In this situation? He had resigned himself to living a lonely hellish existence that had no love in it. Then Jane came into his life and some of the darkness lifted. His world wasn't so bleak. He began to feel. Happiness. Respect.Love. Joy. Hope. He'd never felt truly loved before either. He wanted to never be without it again. He wanted to give her all that she had been denied in life. And now, she is leaving and is utterly lost to him in every way. I think his reaction is about right.
@Schoolgirl32511 жыл бұрын
I think that Dalton seems melodramatic, but that's only because Zelah Clarke is so cold and non-passionate in comparison. If she had more passion this scene could be perfect.

I was saying that his acting would have been amazing in this scene if Zelah had been more passionate too. It's true that Jane isn't raving on the brink of insanity, like Rochester in the novel, but she did cry, and she did kiss her beloved on the cheek. Zelah almost makes it look like Jane can't wait to get away from Rochester. It seems that she's more irritated than heartbroken.

Well, in the book, this conversation is supposed to be taking place in the evening whereas the wedding was supposed to take place in the morning -- and after being brought into the attic to view Mrs. Rochester, Jane shuts herself in her room to think and is so upset that she forgets to eat or drink. This is why she faints (or nearly faints) in Rochester's arms when she comes out. It also seems likely that Jane would still be in a state of emotional shock at this point...as many people would be only a few hours after having one of their fondest hopes dashed, quite possibly forever. If I were in Jane's shoes, I think there would also be at least some amount of anger mixed in with the shock. After all, no matter how strong Rochester's feelings for Jane might be and no matter how good his intentions might have been, it was rather selfish and dishonest of him to withhold the information from her about his wife. Even though Rochester withheld all knowledge of his wife from Jane so that he could persuade her to marry him, there is simply no way for him to be with her honestly and honorably at that point which she would need in order to maintain the things which matter most to her (her moral virtue and her self-respect). I think Zelah Clarke was trying to show how adamant Jane is in her determination, especially since the book says that she wants to stay with him almost more than anything else -- she can't really afford to let her feelings show for fear that she will weaken and agree to stay with him even though it would mean betraying her own values. She's trying to separate herself from him emotionally, because she knows she has to leave and is already planning to do so.
@monmothma33587 жыл бұрын
In general I agree that Zelah didn't show enough emotion, but not in this scene. Observe her body language, her pale face, her voice when she says "I cannot BE yours" - it's filled with more emotion than all her other scenes put together. She always was better at acting with her voice than her face, IMO. And I actually think this is Dalton's best scene, he overacts a little bit, but only towards the end. If they had stopped before MY HOPE!! MY LOVE!! etc, it would have been fine :)

Yup his portrayal is very much accurate, however even I don't like his " you will" at the end. Otherwise the whole scene is performed well. I like 2011 version's take on this scene, and since most of the dialogues are changed and modified, the acting comes off more naturally.

it's true that Charlotte was a child when this version was filmed. But I liked her as Jane and you're right - she would be terrific opposite Timothy Dalton. It's too bad that Zefferelli's version of "Jane Eyre" was so anemic. I had had higher hopes for it but was disappointed with it.

Jane should never have gone back to him. She was wise to leave there and never look back. She told the truth - “Look to God”. When poor Bertha died, she should have said to his echo “You made your bed.”

Sorry great acting from Timothy Dalton but Jane is comically short and this spoiled a great performance for me
@mohammedashian8094 Жыл бұрын
Well In the book she’s fairly young and so very tiny but I guess it was to be ironic and contrast (I’m probably overthinking it but still) that regardless of her size she was a very strong enough woman to reject Mr Rochester who would’ve had any other lesser and weaker woman THROW herself at him but not her
@maineclayton2419 Жыл бұрын
Jane is actually short based on the novel and the actress there Zelah Clarke has the closest physical resemblance of Jane in all "Jane Eyre" adaptations available. Jane was made to be short because it was based on Charlotte Brontë's appearance who was short as well. Charlotte wanted to prove that short people can be strong, smart and independent too.
@SibyllaCumana Жыл бұрын
It's not the fact that she's short to me, it's the fact that there is no chemistry nor emotions on her side. She can't keep up with him, she just recites her lines without acting on them. And she looks too old for the part. It's a pity because had it not been for her rendition, this miniseries would have been marvelous

Classic example of how religion can pevert ones logic. Obviously Rochester was tricked but she couldnt see it..
@OreadNYC4 жыл бұрын
Rochester is the one who refuses to see that by lying to Jane and withholding information from her that potentially could affect her life (and would have ruined her if the truth had come out after the fact rather than before), he was choosing to do to her something similar to what his father and his brother did to him. Granted, Rochester's motives were somewhat better than theirs were -- they simply wanted him conveniently out of the way with a rich wife so that the father would not need to divide the estate whereas it seems clear that Rochester genuinely had feelings for Jane and wanted to give her a more comfortable life. However, this does nothing to change the fact that he made decisions primarily based on what *HE* wanted without really taking Jane's needs and feelings into account. True, this would not have been uncommon according to the standards of the time...but one of the main points of the book is that Jane is a woman who follows the dictates of her own excellent mind as well as her conscience even if it is contrary to what society expects. You can see an example of the way in which Rochester overlooks Jane's feelings during the shopping trip to Meryton (which this miniseries did not show) -- he wants to dress Jane in bright colors, but she clearly feels uncomfortable with the idea. Rochester had good intentions -- and many men of his time would not have -- but that doesn't alter the fact that by deceiving her, he was encouraging her to do something which she would have regretted most profoundly later on if she had learned the truth after the fact.
