Cool. Interesting lesson. I appreciate how you offer quality material for a fair price. To answer your question, biggest jazz improv challenge for me I think is getting the practice to come out in real time playing.
@JoeHubbardBass4 ай бұрын
Translating practice into real-time playing is indeed a process that takes time, but understanding the correct learning progressions is crucial. Many bassists find themselves stuck in a loop, repeating exercises without context, hoping everything will eventually click. However, there's a more structured approach to mastering improvisation. In the accompanying PDF available on my website, I break down this process into five key stages: 1. Definition 2. Assimilation 3. Integration 4. Superimposition 5. Application Each stage builds on the previous one, providing a clear path from understanding concepts to applying them fluently in your playing. This framework can help you move beyond repetitive practice and towards meaningful musical growth.

I've been really digging into the lesson this week. Really a nice sound and your fingerings have been very helpful to see the scale across the fretboard when working all 12 keys.

An augmented scale is just a Major scale with a raised 5th.
@MV-XD24 ай бұрын
No. In C it has C, E, G and B in common but it also contains Eb and G#. It is a mistake to think of a scale in context of a totally different scale. Technically it is two augmented chords together (C and Eb). You can also express it as three overlapping major triads (C, Eb and Ab). If you listen to the patterns Joe is playing it sounds nothing like a major scale.

Great observation! You're absolutely right about the Ionian Augmented scale, which is indeed a major scale with a raised 5th. It's fantastic to see you're familiar with these concepts. However, in this lesson, we're exploring a different beast altogether - the Augmented scale. While both scales can work over a Maj7(#5) chord, they each have their unique flavours and applications: Ionian Augmented: As you noted, it's the third mode of the Harmonic Minor scale. It has a distinct sound that's rooted in traditional harmony. Augmented scale: This symmetrical scale has a more ethereal, ambiguous quality. It's incredibly versatile, fitting over various chord qualities beyond just Maj7(#5). The Augmented scale opens up a world of creative possibilities in jazz and fusion contexts. Its symmetrical structure allows for some mind-bending harmonic superimpositions and intervallic patterns. Have you experimented with both scales in your playing? I'd love to hear your thoughts on how they differ in practice. Keep up the great musical analysis!

@@JoeHubbardBass After I commented, I tried to recall (from studying music theory last century and this century) if the Augmented I was thinking of also contains a raise 7th scale degree. It's now going to bother me until I look it up *LOL* I appreciate your detailed explanation here, and givine me the opportunity to learn more!
