When I was a little girl my Mom would do my hair, like the scene in this video and she will always tell me I was beautiful and will ask me do I believe I'm beautiful and I will look down at the carpet with tears in my eyes with a sad voice and say no... and then she will tell me 1,000 reason why I'm beautiful and that I should believe it too no matter what.... not just to cheer me up but to make me realize that beauty is seen in different ways. I believe going to a all white school at a young age I always felt like I didn't belong or didn't feel pretty enough until I got older and realized I'm just as beautiful if not amazing.

As a North African woman, in my culture hair plays such a big social role, not only a beauty or vain role. Our tradition is to adorn each other hair with hand made pearls, sea shells, and hand made headpieces that we invented 2500 years ago and that we passed down from generation to generation. We offer those pieces to each other and make them for each other as a sign of respect and love. We oil, brush and bread each other's hair.
