On my recent trip to Augusta, Georgia, I discovered a beautiful free nature area 1/2 mile from the Augusta airport- the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park.
Phinizy Swamp is a 1,100-acre wetland nature park located in Augusta, Georgia, near the Savannah River. The swamp was created in the 1990s as part of a restoration project to clean up a former landfill site, and it has since become a popular destination for birdwatching, hiking, and wildlife observation.
The swamp is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, including alligators, beavers, otters, and numerous bird species such as herons, egrets, and bald eagles. The park has a network of hiking trails and boardwalks that allow visitors to explore the wetlands and observe the wildlife.
In addition to its recreational and educational opportunities, Phinizy Swamp is also an important research site for wetland ecology and conservation. The park's staff and volunteers conduct research on the swamp's ecosystem and collaborate with universities and other organizations to advance wetland conservation efforts.
I explored the area after my flight to Augusta and was on the lookout for Gators!!

Swamp? What's that? Us Southwestern people don't do swamps. 🤣 All joking aside, that's a pretty cool place. Loads of greenery and opportunities for exploration. Just so different from the desert... i tmust have been so surreal. 😄

It really felt so foreign, I loved all the sounds of frogs and crickets :-) The park was much bigger than I was expecting!

It's not next to a golf course, but the US Masters is played in this town, Augusta Georgia, in fact I think it ended the day before I arrived!
