I’ve just had a case of this beer delivered and the first video I see when I logged onto KZbin was this one. Such a classic German Dunkel this. Can’t wait to crack open a bottle and enjoy!!

Totally agree Si.. a purity law is essential. Its simply not beer if syrups, additives and indeed tap water is used. Tap water that contains a worrying amount of treatment chemicals and fluoride. Thanks, but no thanks.

As opposed to what…? Water straight out of the river?? Is that generally what’s used in brewing?

@@pgl0897 Sorry for being a dick.. I was sloshed last night. All good distilleries and the very best brewers do actually use spring water. Scotland is full of fresh water springs. Natural springs can occur everywhere rain filters through mineral rocks and collects in a naturally formed well.

@@pgl0897 I keep having comments removed because of my political stance and the need to ask why!? Apparently why is illegal now. Anyway, I apologised for being a dick. And Yes, the best distilleries and brewers do use fresh springs. They're everywhere were rain filters through mineral rocks and settle in naturally formed wells.

I have to agree a fabulous dunkel beer. I took your advice and had a look at Beers of Europe and bought quite a few German beers for the festive season and have not been disappointed with the quality, Benediktiner Hell, Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel, Flensburger pilsner and Flensburger gold are just some of our favourites and yes we really do need purity laws in this country. Merry Christmas Si.

What`s annoying is the UK mainstream brewers are capable of producing good quality beer but choose to produce awful beer instead. Why is that? Have they lost their pride or is it the ridiculous tax that have dashed any aspirations to even bother anymore?
@pgl0897Күн бұрын
Awful beer + expensive marketing is more profitable than good beer + expensive marketing. Simple as that. The problem is Capitalism. If you care about making good quality beer, you’re either doing it as a hobby at a loss, or you won’t survive in a market dominated by globalnational corporations.

Was drinking this in cologne in November. Unbelievable stuff. Had their hells and fest beer. Both amazing also. The big pub in cologne was amazing. Food looked immense. Can't wait to go back. On a separate note found a small Irish metal bar that sold murphys stout and that was spectacular!!!

See these Christmas Beers from Morrisons each year and avoid them like the plague. A beer of about 4% ABV is not a Christmas Beer to me it needs to be at least 5.5% ABV, e.g. Twelve Days From Hook Norton. Yes I did see the Train Beer episode with Cowbridge. As you said Augustiner is an excellent brewery, I rate Ayinger up there as well.

I have a question: Up until recently, I imagined the German purity law would have precluded ghastly _glucose syrups_ from beer.. but it turns out I'm completely wrong! The hell is all that about??

No Nigerian Guinness, no La Chouffe, no PBR… Whilst not forgetting that the purity law for top ferments allows the use of sugar (e.g. syrups…) so the aforementioned regional Christmas beers were probably technically compliant anyway despite not being particularly pleasant. I’m all for beer not having dead cats or hallucinogenic herbs in them in the spirit of the original law and I’m all for preserving wheat reserves to ensure people have bread to eat rather than beer to drink if we ever reach that point again. But the idea that you can’t call an alcoholic drink made from malted grains ‘beer’ and the idea that the ‘purity’ (not quality, see Becks for example) law ensures quality are both slightly absurd. German beer is great quality because the German people love good beer and there would be an uproar if they were served a poor quality product, that doesn’t stop them adding syrups or fizzy pop or fruit and all the things that upset the ‘purity law’ crowd at the point of consumption though. Whereas British beer has been in a state of flux with the great ABV squeeze, the increasing dominance of UK brewed ‘premium’ ‘foreign’ lager and the fact that craft beer scene (or rather the commercialisation of it) has put an emphasis of pushing out ‘new’ and ‘exciting’ beers at craft volumes and at supermarket prices rather than focusing on solid classics like in Germany.

Put it in the right glass and the head will stay there longer. Should be a great beer though. not sure what you're on about regarding fruit beers and sours not being "classic" - there's a huge tradition of both styles in Belgium, plus Gose sour beers from E Germany - all classics in their regions. Of course fruit beers in Belgium use juice, not syrups. Totally with you on no syrups in beers.

Glass not the best for head retention, too wide at top for lagers, Ive had this on tap at Augustiner and it had an enormous head, bottle sounds very hissy and fizzy not the same stuff you get on tap thats for sure, probably extra carbonated for export and storage extension. But yes Augustiner make some nice beers but its still large scale macro lager compared to the smaller breweries quality in Germany 🍻
