On vacation to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, but I found time to watch. More like I couldn’t wait for it to drop 😆

You have a long reach Grandmother… I needed one, it’s a big Empire.

30+ years of studying and reading about the Julio-Claudians and I still need to have a family tree to hand to remind myself who begat whom when it gets beyond the immediate offspring! A greater variety of names would certainly have helped - more nicknames at least!

6:06 IIRC, Mark Antony's daughter Cleopatra Selene II, was also raised in the house of Octavia.

That interrogation scene with Livia and Claudius was one of the peak moments of a great series. My favorite bit was when Livia tries to avoid giving a straight answer by remarking that Claudius has lost his stammer. Two fantastic actors at their best, working a great script.

The scene of Brian Blessed dressing down Julia's lovers is another. That's a man who was born to shout.

I do find fascinating how the only emperor to be a direct descendant of Augustus was also potentially one of the worst (Caligula),
@TEMindset837022 күн бұрын
Nero was a great, great grandson of Augustus. Nero’s mother was Agrippina the Younger, a sister of Caligula.

@ ah i forgot about that connection thank you, still 2 terrible emperors makes it kind of worse lol

Having a team of No. 3's in a political situation like that of Augustus is often far more safe than having a No.2.

Dr Goldsworthy, A couple of questions on Roman relationships 1- Is this type of familly structure "normal" for the upper levels in the late republic? 2- The complex relationships in the "familly tree", a protective measure for Octavian's government? I'm not thinking nepotism, more like now a company runs except they use familly conection as a type of 'contract' structure!

I just keep thinking that if Germanicus had lived then perhaps the Julio-Claudians would have lasted longer.

Nobody will ever convince me that all those julio-claudians died naturally. Such a shame as well, i believe the empire would have been a lot more stable had they not all killed each other off and actually established a system of dynastic succession
