This method is used when it's not practical to reach suitable soil - in this case, the challenge was difficult geotechnical and relentless wet weather conditions.
The 'caisson' is gradually sunk into place by removing material from the inside or adding weight, and once it is at the desired depth, the bottom is sealed.
