what was the interval for these shots?
@DavidMarx8 жыл бұрын
Good question. I put as little delay as possible between each of these shots. Using my intervalometers that's a one second delay. Under ordinary night sky conditions, I can get away with a longer pause (generally 5 seconds or so depending upon the lens) and the gaps are invisible with a little smoothing added when compiling the time-lapse. But up in the Arctic it is so cold that the camera battery life is a constant challenge. What I have learned is that every second of battery life up there counts so the more delay you add, the fewer shots that you will get before the cold shuts everything down.

Hi David, those are one of the best Aurora time lapse I have seen so far, amazing work! Care to share the most common setting you have on the camera for the time lapse you have shot? Aperture, ISO, shutter speed, interval between shots?
@DavidMarx6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I have taught a number of Aurora Borealis photography workshops over the years. The advice that I give my students is to set a baseline exposure as if we were photographing the Milky Way or pinpoint sharp stars. Ian Norman has an excellent "exposure calculator" for this on his website over at www.lonelyspeck.com/milky-way-exposure-calculator/ Starting with these settings, say 20" f/1.4 ISO 3200 for example, you adjust your shutter speed as the Aurora appears. The brighter the Lights get the faster the shutter. What we want to avoid the most is blown out highlights and over exposure. If things get really bright like during a huge solar storm, or if you are shooting in a place with lots of moonlight / artificial lights, than you can also lower the ISO too but your top priority is always the shutter speed. For the interval between shots, if you are shooting for time-lapse, I have two suggestions. If the Aurora is really dancing across the sky than use as short an interval as possible. This will generally be a 1" gap between shots with most intervalometers. If, on the other hand, the Aurora is just a green glow at the horizon with little motion than use about 1/5 of your shutter of speed for the interval; Ex 20" exposures = 4 second interval between shots. The wild card in this interval equation is the temperature and your camera battery life. That advice on using a 1/5ish gap between shots is silly when the ambient temperature is way below zero. In extreme cold situations, it's the battery life that limits our ability to shoot long time-lapse sequences so you might as well shoot with a minimal interval (1") between frames since you know that the battery is significantly reduced. I hope this advice helps. Thanks again and if you are interested I have a whole series of in-depth video tutorials on how I processed these time-lapse clips at www.focusphotoschool.com/adobe-photoshop-lightroom/time-lapse-photography/

Thanks for the fast and very detail reply, it really helps! Planning for a tour coming Dec to Iceland, trying to gather all the information I can so not to mess up my Aurora shooting. You have been extremely helpful, thanks again.
@anzaeria Жыл бұрын
Very detailed explanations, thank you. I'm hoping to shoot a time lapse of the elusive southern lights on the other side of the world. Though as I'm based in Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island in South Australia, the chances of seeing the southern lights are very slim. Still, I'd like to try if the conditions look favourable. If they do appear here, I would imagine that they would probably be a bit faint, distant and not bright. Hence I could keep my exposure times long. Previously, I did use 30 second exposures for a milkyway time lapse with a 12mm f2 lens on M4/3 format. I suppose I could use those 30 second exposures again for a southern lights time lapse here on Kangaroo Island. Can't recall though if I shot at 1600iso or 3200iso with the milkyway time lapse.@@DavidMarx
