Loved my time at RAAF Fairbairn with 5SQN 1966-67. Went on a few exercises up North and whenever the opportunity came up for a flight somewhere I put my hand up. Fantastic pierce of machinery.

Was lucky enough to get to ride in a Huey in the early '80s as an army cadet absolutely loved it. And my youngest daughter got to ride in a Black Hawk as part of the armys program for encouraging young females to join the armed services

The UH-1H is alot faster than the speed stated here. 204 kmh is only its cruise speed.. Its max speed was well over 240 kmh

I like the clip of old mate stick welding shirtless with no gloves next to a grease gun. Hey at least he’s got his helmet on 👍🏻

Love the Huey. My first ever flying experience was a Huey doing an air assault demonstration at the Amberley Air show 1977.

The iconic wop-wop-wop sound instantly triggers memories and feelings, doesn’t it? Here’s my story: Stationed in West Germany in 1985 I hopped a flight with a Captain in our section who needed 48 hours a year to maintain flight pay. The weather turned to shite, lightning strikes all around. “Do these ever get hit by lightning?” I asked into the headset. “Yes, but we can usually remain airborne.” He replied. Usually 😳 We ended up setting down unscheduled until the weather cleared up some. Good times 🤣

The Australians first used the UH1B, the short frame Huey, for a few years. And then all the footage and pictures that I see are the UH1D or the long frame Huey. Did the Australians stop using the UH1B altogether when they switched? Or did they keep the B model for rear duties? If so, what year did the changeover take place from short frame to long frame?

In 1979 the RAAF couldn't handle operating these helicopters with SASR in the anti terrorist role! I was head-hunted by the RAN to come here and fly in that role using the old Wessex 31Bs. Having flown in Wessex 5s (and others) of the RN in such roles! It wasn't the Huey's that were incapable? It was the useless RAAF (Crabs) who couldn't do the job! Crabs, God bless them and God protect us from them!
