Very accurate. However as an Australian I would use caution when smiling at total strangers. If it’s face-to-face it’s okay to smile within reason. But you should use caution if you smile to somebody on public transport or in a bar as example. They may think your sexually interested, or maybe your creepy. There’s a time and a place to smile at a stranger in Australian culture - so please be careful.

It's always good to be a few minutes early to a meeting, have a casual chat with colleagues and get yourself settled, the meeting should start when the scheduled time is, so if it's 9am that's when business starts and you shouldn't be walking in the door at 9am. Appointments like doctors, dentists, job interviews, etc you should always be a little early. If it's a casual catch up with friends, then you can meet at the appointed time, you don't have to be early though most people aim to be a few minutes early.

I'm Australian and the most important thing from this is that Australians are very casual and jokey, we actually feel very uncomfortable if people act too formal, for me it feels like I'm dealing with a robot or that the person isn't sincere if they act overly formal. So be yourself and have a good sense of humour and then you'll get along with Australians, they like to enjoy life and not take things too seriously.

After teaching students in Spain for a full school year, I’ve realised how unique some of our Australian cultural norms are, so I’ve been scanning KZbin to see what others have to say about us! One thing I’ve noticed in Europe is that spitting on the ground is completely normal, people should keep in mind that most Australians find this quite shocking and unhygienic. In fact it’s illegal to spit in certain places.

Number four is a very real thing. It's not that Australians are uncomfortable with other people it is that we are used to a lower population density that allows for a larger person space bubble. Even with Australia you can see the differences between Capital city folks and the more rural, or even less sparsely populates Outback folks in how close they stand.

Good start. Racism and discrimination doesn't really have anything to do with Aussie culture since its more of a legal thing. Aussie culture is not just defined by sports or any of the other things you listed. Culture is also about lifestyle such as Aussies like to bbq and go to the beach etc. Aussie culture is a multicultural blend of other cultures so we can't really label Aussie culture specifically since our people are a hybrid of Australian Indian Asian European etc.

The one problem with racism in Australia is actually in the younger communities. Racism towards people for their culture or accents is more common in Australia than racism against colour. I am rxtremely worried about our future when I’ve heard really young kids use racial slurs.

All youth, globally, are guilty of using racial/ethic/religious/gender/class slurs. Its a part of gaining group acceptance from your peers, which is so important and essential to teenagers. Most as they mature realise these juvenille traits are just that. Its wrong to assume that a persons behaviour as a youth dictates their behaviour as an adult. Generally I honestly feel that most Aussies are not racist, and believe that our culture rejects racism at all stages. We Australians are very proud of culture and our identity. Deep in our hearts is the principal that we will accept anyone, without hesitatation, as long as you embrace our culture, and its values.

Female Aussie perspective here. WE do not use the term ma'am here. Either call us by our first name or if you don't know it say nothing! Retail workers may be told to use that term but we do not appreciate that word. Secondly, not once have I come across a YT similar to this which mentions our ability to know who was before us at the Deli or whatnot. If the server says , "Who's next?" Don't try to jump the queue because you will have your head bitten off! We don't line up but do a quick visual of the people around the counter before us, to know when it is our turn. Otherwise, good video!

Hey...... I was just wondering if the australian work culture is bias towards outsiders or not? I'm looking to study in australia as a chemistry major and some of my friends say that it is very biased for outsiders. For example, let's say i have a master's degree for my major and i'm basically qualified to be some sort of chemist, but because i'm an outsider, they kinda prioritize their own citizens and reject me even IF i am far more qualified then the other contenders.

Hi Lorelyn, I am indeed an Australian now :) None of these things are misinterpreted though. They are just different and that is perfectly ok. We are making another video on similar topic which will have difference between Australian and Indian culture. :)

My dad joked that 'we should've beat them more when they were younger' to my brother's Israeli girlfriend. She was horrified. And my parents, brother and I were laughing. I did not envy my brother the job of trying to explain that to her. lmao My parents also joke about their 'first two children' (my brother and I are their only children) and I wonder how my brother's girlfriend will react when she hears that one... XD

Why aren’t you prepared to pay for them ,instead of expecting the Australian taxpayer to pay for you? Just a hint from an Australian, education of any sort for overseas students is astronomical, that’s how Australian universities make their money and give false degrees to overseas students.

man this list is wrong, everyone discriminates in Australia, i have been discriminated against tons of times and i was born here am white and male, and racist, almost everyone i know is racist against someone ROFL. don't like to be late my ass, FFS has this guy even been to Australia... no one ever turns up on time. people eat on public transport all the time, it is allowed, if it is messy food they may get upset, general rule of thumb is as long as it doesn't make a mess. people yell into their phones all the time on public transport, i feel this is a don't everywhere, who want to hear half of someone else's conversation any way, no one will stop you but you will get some dirty looks. lol what happened to picking up at a pub or club, yall gotta bother fellow students and work mates.
@redo73
@redo73 4 ай бұрын
You're wrong. I'm an Australian living in Brisbane who only uses public transport.. Our culture generally adheres to being 'on time'. Eating is not allowed on public transport & only a few do it Rarely is there a loud conversation....from any culture (unless drunk or bogans).
