It looks like a great race! In the States it would be considered more of a Grand Prix than a desert race based on having a groomed course and running multiple laps. A desert race here is usually two different loops of 40 to 50 miles each. The course is marked with pieces ribbon tied to bushes every few hundred feet (meters) and arrows at significant turns.

Thinking, how would Stefan Svitko (2nd on Dakar after Toby) ended up on Hattah.

Would love to see some international names have a crack (e.g. Sunderland, Sainz, van Beveran, Svitko, Barreda etc.) at Hattah or even Finke. Would really make the racing interesting (but I have a feeling there'd be contract conflictions with their sponsors).

I'm 61. I used to race a YZ490 back in the day. 30 years later I bought a WR450 and I can fully understand where this guy is coming from. My first day out on the 450F I came off 5 times and was bruised from top to bottom, literally. I smashed into a fallen tree at one point, I somehow managed to go over the bars and through all the branches, but it took me quite some time to break the branches to free my bike. It was really wedged in there tight. I still have the desire to ride like I used to, the knowledge is still in my head, but the skills have diminished along with my strength and fitness. I wish I was young again. It's not just the exhaustion of the body that makes it difficult, it's that when the body feels like that, the brain quickly becomes affected as well causing you to make poor judgement calls because you know how tired your body is. I a mate I used to ride with 30 odd years ago that has never been off his bike in those 30 years and he still rides almost as well as he used to. He once finished 3rd at the Fink desert rally. I used to ride alongside him with ease. Not these days. I believe it is possible to ride like I used to, again, but it would take a lot of time and pain. My hat off to this guy. Although it's only been 10 years for him.
