Today we are checking out one of, if not the cheapest free standing 270/batwing awnings in australia! I've had the OCAM Premium Wing Awning on my 4WD for just over a month so this isn't my full review, but we are going to show off everything about the awning and of couse how much it costs! I think this could be one of the best camping mods i've ever done to my 4x4

My young fella has one of these, along with the side opening OCAM RTT, could not be happier with it, he christened both of them with a week on Frasier, not a single problem. I helped him mount and set them up, I was more than impressed with the quality and build.

They are a game changer, I like anything fast, had mine for 2 years 30 second awning In windy WA you have to be more diligent on tie downs Another big advantage of these you can move your vehicle with it fully deployed as the sun moves it’s shadow That way you’re always in the shade Another excellent review

I picked one up from the wreckers for $50, thought it was a normal awning guess the wreckers did as well. Used it a dozen times but didn't really like it that much after it got hit by a few southerly busters so put it on market place for make a offer it sold within a few minutes for 1000 bucks. I thought the bloke was mad when offered me that much as would have been happy for what I paid for it, then I googled the brand and seen the cost new. Now that I'm not camping out of my 4wd every weekend and using a soft floor camper I wish I had of kept it at least the price has dropped a lot on these so I might buy a new one that's why I'm looking at reviews now.

I purchased a 30 second awning, free-standing 270 back in 2017 and man, what a game changer. Probably the most used accessory on my car to be honest. Even back then it was only $1100. Heavy duty canvass with a sturdy aluminium frame and the wall kit was only a couple of hundred. I have had it in scorching heat in the Pilbara western australia, wet season storms in the kimberly and all the way to the east coast with torrential wind and rain and its still going strong. Seriously, if this thing ever breaks, I'll buy another one because I have definitely got my monies worth.

Great bit of kit 👌👍 they must have come out of the same factory that makes the drifta 270. I've had a drifta for about 6 months and they are bloody great! Not too heavy and easy as to set up and take down. Drifta do full canvas sheets for walls but I like the walls you have maybe a bit better though probably not as strong. Best mod to do with the tie off strap to the roof rack/tent is get rid of that strap and grab yourself a rope ratchet from Bunnings - they cost about $12 and has a simple hook and ratchet the awning tight. I like em so much I have bought one for each time down point and have a caribeener on one end and the hook on the other. Makes it super easy to tie down and readjust if necessary 👌👌😎😎 The flex on yours is definitely just the way it's mounted to the tent because mine doesn't flex at all. You want to look at gett reinforced brackets. I think drifta do them and they have extra metal to support it. And you want 4 mounts as well more focused to the hinge end. Rob from slacks creek drifta store did a great vid on how to set it up so it doesn't flex. That quality you get for the price is pretty sweet and it makes it much more usable for quick stops. Nothing better than pulling up for a lunch stop and having instant shed 👌👍😎

Well I just purchased one, $809.10 with free delivery. What an absolute bargain. I've been looking at 270°s for ages but I just couldn't commit because they're so expensive but this is awesome. Going to mount it to my alloy canopy that I put on my ute that I have set up for camping in.

Great vid again. I note some comments still say not enough coverage. Don't figure! Well go big and get a Bunduawn 360° as we did, but they'll pay for it. We have the 360° unit, love how it shades the whole car from sun, so cool to get into vehicle on sunny day. It's also freestanding and as you pull it around the unit has self erecting uprights lifting awning higher than car roof to avoid water pooling, but we have found we do have to create a hollow with a centre pull ground rope to allow runoff in heavy rains. Unfortunately, even though it's classified as freestanding we found for peace of mind we're compelled to put upright support poles and ropes in, however it is a vast area to catch wind. You'll experience this also I'm guessing, hope you enjoy the convenience as we have, ours also gets utilised more than our previous roll out awning as you had.

Definitely a competitive price for a 270 freestanding. I instead went for the Bushwakka Extreme Darkness 270. Quite a bit more expensive but has 900D ripstop nylon over the Ocam having 600D. The frame looks sturdier although it is 8kg heavier. The Bushwakka also has built-in led lighting.

Well done on doing a thorough and well presented review. I totally agree, a few years ago the prices of free standing awnings where through the roof. So when I got my first 270 awning, I bought one that needed poles (Batwing). But I've since replaced that with a free standing version nearly 2 years ago. The biggest differece I've found is I use it a lot more than my previous awning, for exactly the same reason you pointed out - so much easier (& quicker) to setup and pack away. I'm like you when camping, I'm all for easy and quick setup and pack. 👍

Great work. 👍👍 I can totally relate to your message. I don't use my 270-degree awning (Rhino-Rack Batwing) as often due to the setup. I now only really set it up at camp if there is a chance of rain. It might mean, it's time to replace it. I'm all for making camping setup and packing quick and easy. 👌👌

I wish more of these awnings covered more of the front of the car, they always cut off at an angle rather than having perpendicular coverage at the front of the awning. There is also significantly less space out to the side of the car that throwing a swag underneath isn’t always possible. If rain and wind come in you can’t drop the awning down , rather you’ll need to setup a massive awning wall and have more to dry afterwards

I bought the Kings version for about $400. The brackets are HUGE and not compatible with a rooftop tent. Had to MacGyver it to get it to mount, buying galvanised brackets from Bunnings, plus slide the tent over a little so it would open properly (tourer x). The side walls are sold individually, and are kinda pricy for what they are. I only bought 2, which was enough to hide from torrential rain. They dont go straight down, but out at an angle which gives you more floor space. I had the standard awning before that, and it bent on the 2nd trip, plus kept falling down with the wind. The 270 is brilliant. Like you said, one hand set up in seconds. Its a bit heavier than the OCAM at 28kgs.
@mikehunt5626

There is 1 negative that will only piss you off when the rain hits. The awning is great value, yes but there is a huge gap between the car and the awning at the hinge point. add some wind to the downpour and you will have a river pouring into the sheltered area turning it into a swamp. I will wait and see how it goes for ya Pat, I am looking at a much more expensive 1 as it covers that area 80% better than this unit does. Love ya videos dude, no bullshit here just honesty.

I’m sorry but I gotta be the one to say it - this isn’t a free standing awning and Ocam don’t sell it as one either. Free standing during setup yes, but I’m sure Ocam would agree that at the hint of wind it will need tying down. There is no way those arms would be engineered to withstand over 30 knots which is regular for gusts of wind on the beach. Having said that, this is the requirement for most 270 awnings short of the Bush Company XT and the Bushwakka ones but they will set you back $2000+. I’m sure it’s a good 270 awning but it’s definitely not a free standing awning. And just be a Debbie Downer…I’m sorry guys but I liked the channel more when you didn’t get free stuff. Free stuff is always good. No one ever says anything bad about free stuff. I don’t deny you any success in life but it was more genuine back then when your own $ is at stake. Around about the time you got the big fridge is when I stopped watching for trusted reviews and started watching just for entertainment. Still subscribed and you are still my top 3 content creator. I guess they come in a larger size but if not I dont think id bother getting one. as i like the extra width on the other brand awnings. you say you dont like getting wet if raining but it looks like your new 270 makes getting into your side access rooftop tent more chance of getting a shower by the time you close up your outer door and climb up into your tent. but i must admit it does look great. a credit to Ocam.. big Tick.

i sent a message to OCAM, asking if they are going into the UK/Europe market.. as i looked at the awning you showed.. Would be a little better to get it if available from over this side of the world.. WHAT i loved was the prices to be fair, prices here are horrendous.. so so sooooooooo much money, out of the price range of most people. No such thing as a low price, non premium quality item.. so its the best that is expensive, or nothing.. I saw so much on their website that would be ideal over here, ok course most of the Toyota etc stuff like 80s we dont have, but the actual camping stuff would be cool.. I would take that awning straight away and with sides.. WHat i like about your channel is its not expensive top end items..... lower priced stuff, which of course means corners on cost are cut but still more available to most of us.. and i like how you do the stuff yourself, and you dont have always perfect results so you go back and change stuff, like the electrics, the switches and panels... i am so desperate for a front bar work for my Gen 2 Paj but getting even stuff like slide, or lift up opening rear side windows is a no no.. Making pull out shelves and so on, rather than buying... showing stuff and trying things is what i really like..... Setting up camp, the order you do it, what you actually carry ..... and why.... then putting it all back away to move on, stuff like this is interesting, which we done see enough of. Anyway hoping the weather is good here this week, so much to do on mine, before its ready to go back to Ukraine in January (sub zero..15 or so and bad blizzards).. got more help to give over there for the animals... its a drive through Europe from England, but if i said like 1500k, 2000km that is a lot for people over here by far, but down under it seems not much lol. Anyway need food... dont go top end, big sponsors etc.. keep it real, for the man in the street as we say here.. cya Jules, Sheffield, England.

No worries! All depends on how you mount it, mine is mounted the same as my old king's awning and I never had any issue with that. it's mounted to the channels of the RTT via a bracket so there is a small gap, but it's covered up by the awning cover. I never had an issue with it in the past and in our initial rain tests it's been fine, keen to see how it goes in a torrential downpour with wind, that will be in full review in couple of months 🤙

How does the roof rack handle the weight of the tent and awning together in a off road situation.. no mention of Max load rating on the ocam website ?

Great video, for me personally there is not enough room under it at all as it is, then the walls aren't the slanted design so there goes even more space. But good video.

Looks like a sweet awning set up. How far does the awning come out perpendicularly from the side of your rig? Same at the back.

Hi Mate im considering one in due course once i get a roof rack sorted to hold it. I noticed that the bugs and flies can get in via the gaps to the car if using the mesh window walls. Would you fit a double swag under it as well as some free standing tables n chairs etc at the same time?

Overall an amazing awning. But why make the walls 'all or nothing'? WOuldn't it be better to have panels that velcro together side by side? Sometimes you just want privacy (or protection from wind/rain) in one direction and you want to keep things as open as possible in your campsite.

This is one product where I think it is money well spent to pay more and get bigger, tougher, stronger frame engineering, rather than take the cheapest. Owners buy it specifically so they can use it without poles, so will be tempted to leave it that way as often as possible. It is not the breeze that builds gradually that is the problem, it is the shock gust that will wreck a cheap model. Cheers

The only point I can see that you missed with the wall tent is the fact that it gives you somewhere private to undress/change which for couples and people with children is a big selling point 😉

Thank you Patrick for the comprehensive review, I have been looking at these for some time, the big priced brands and thought the OCAM one I checked out at the Melb 4x4 was just as good, maybe a tad diff in the canvas on the dearer model but hey who can afford that bigger price for what they both can be used for! Thanks mate!

Another great review! 👍🏼 My only gripe tho is how you titled the video, as I think it may not be the cheapest as there is a Kings one that is cheaper (not saying it’s as good tho) and you also said “buying” in the title, but then it sounded in the video like you were given it for a review. Anyway, no big deal! Also wondering what they are like in the rain with water coming down between the awning and the vehicle, is that annoying? Suppose it can’t be helped much.
