When Indian parents (speaking from an Indian's POV) "forcefully" make their kids do something, it's 99% of the time for their own good. I had short hair throughout elementary and middle school so that it was easy to maintain and keep neat. Once I reached high school I could grow it as long as I wanted but I still preferred to keep it short :) Also, though it may seem like the Phogat girls have no say when it comes to whether or not they want to wrestle - since when do kids know what's best for them? Good parents recognize potential early and push their kids in the right direction no matter how arduous the journey AND support them through and through - now these ladies are accomplished, world famous athletes because of it! Plus if you look at the majority of families in Haryana (where they are from), and you saw how the other villagers were disapproving; young girls are pushed first into marriage and life in a kitchen rather than what they could potentially be great at. So what he did for his daughters was pivotal and unprecedented - he gave them the weapons to forge their own path and conquer those stereotypes.

And the girls grew up in a society where they couldn't dream and imagine life any other way. So they didn't know what's good and what's bad. Still there are some backward villages where girls think their purpose in life is to get married, have child(ren) and do the household chores and cooking. A person or people from modern society who is never exposed to such situation can never understand so they (Dillon couple) didn't get it either. On a side note, if you can pressure your kids to study and do well in education and you want them to do that so that they can achieve something in their life for "themselves" then pushing someone in physical activities (which they are capable of) is not wrong either.
