Henna is like a paste or like thick cilantro chutney (I don't think Henna is edible, just a reference of how it looks) which is made from Henna leaves and applied on hand/legs or any part of body and you let it dry for few minutes or hours depending upon how dark you want it. Then you wash it off with water and it leave a print of it and it will be there for few days.

Heena (mehendi) is a tree and it's a powder made of it's dried and crushed leaves.... And then soaked in water to make a paste to apply at the han..... After it's applied it is left fir half an hour or so to dry and then green part is removed and red coloured design is left on the hand...

See here is where the local view comes in play !! You are absolutely right , if one is breaking up a marriage its better done before than after. But there is a lot of stigma attached to broken marriages in India, especially for the girl. One deems her unfit for getting married. Plus the family has to go through a lot of shame sadly. You must be aware that marriages in India are a public affair literally. 100's of people have been invited are gathered a week before the marriage. Your then broken marriage also becomes a public affair. And 100 people means 100 mouth !!
