Limitanei are 80 food and 10 wood with straight up more health, better defense vs ranged with the downside of lowered speeds, if you get a mass of food and a bit of wood their cheap wood cost make them easy to mass and the extra health makes them harder to wipe in comparison to a spearman, it's definitely one of the best spears especially with how fast you can make an army of them if they are in cistern network, plus you can focus olive on stuff like Landsknecht, longbowmen, Keshiks, Ghulams, Elephants, grenadiers or streltsy to make up for whatever you don't have the economy for, they certainly have some good stuff but I normally play with a friend versus bots so it's hard to compare with pvp matches.

Drongo, about the Kurultai bonus for archers in Castle Age; - Base damage for Castle Age archers is 7 - The +2 ranged attack from the blacksmith makes 9 damage - Kurulatai gives 20% extra damage which makes 9*120%=10.8 damage So with 6 ranged armor for the MAA/Varangian Guard the damage goes from 3 damage to 4.8 damage with the Kurultai which is a net 60% damage increase for them. Not too shabby indeed!

I think all the Byz units with shields do. Cataphracts have 2 or 3 patterns and Varangians do as well.

Having the Byzantines 1. Be interesting and complex but slow 2. Get constantly attacked and f*ed by every civ in the world, except from some few times where they dominate gloriously 3. Get nerfs along the passage of time is totally historically accurate. Kudos to the dev team.

They beat most of them historically. In game factions they beat the Rus, Abbasids, Ayyubids, and were allies with the HRE most of the time. All while fighting off enemies from multiple fronts. That was really the biggest issue. Having the richest city in the region while being in the center of the known world (all the trade routes went to Constantinople) tends to have everyone attacking you from all directions. If they ever focused on one front alone, they would generally win. As for complexity, they technically had better government that was easier to understand than the vast majority of medieval states. Hence why most of the world's laws and customs come from the Romans/Byzantines (especially Justinian's Codex). If you wanna go for complex, try medieval French cases where they put animals like donkeys on trial for sodomy (actual historical legal case), or have dogs be legal witnesses to a murder, and thus have the right to trial by combat (half myth, but really represents the spirit of the times). (I know the above post is /s, but it's always funny to take the bait).

It's better. Don't forget bizantine mercenary units automatically get all their unique upgrades (if you have the foreign engineering company). you're better off using your gold on other units imo. limetenai are nice but sometimes you really need varangian guards frontline and or cataphracts to charge the backline, the later being particularly gold expensive.

yeah limitanei are strong but you have to consider, the mongol player really took up every bad position he can. He played the wrong units nearly all time, he should have done man at arms way more early. the byzant player had a much faster respont to the enemy units, thats why he took the better fights.... i think they dont have to be nerfed

i dont disagree with you, but you need to consider that when you have big trade you have to spent this somewhere and pick gold heavy units, most of the times its heavy cavarly. Thats why when mongols go hard on trade they almost always have to go keshik, because they dont have the food economy to support something else.

@@Lord-Andre i think the problem is with the number of villages, thus the imbalances with food/gold. You need to consider that traders give mostly gold and villages food and wood. Gold is literally useless without other resources, and its most important for upgrades, which you have the opportunity to spend the most in imperial age.

Byzantines nerfs make me think they have some untapped potential that hasn't been discovered yet, but it comes out in testing, and they might be pretty powerful once that niche* is found. forward cistern rush is a little more viable now with the extra stone too.
