For people that say "But but, survivors dupe items and use glitches to win in matches" is biggest BS you can say in this game. Night Hunter, is the most glitched mode ever in terms of gameplay. Its funny in some way, because pounces and other stuff need very little skill to be good at. Also you dont need to win in order to get rank up. Same for survivors, if you win, good you get goodies, but you get more primaly from destroying nest, so even if you get your cheeks clapped, you will still leave with good haul.

So I damage myself so I can heal, and since I'm on nightmare I heal over time, which means that I can fight the Hunter while passively healing.

It damages myself a little bit, so I can heal myself before fighting the Hunter. This is called prehealing, where since I'm on Nightmare, I heal over time instead of instantly, so I'm passively healing while I'm fighting the Hunter.

So I take damage and can "preheal". Healing on Hard / Nightmare is an over-time thing instead of instant, so if I heal before a fight I'm actively healing while in combat.
