@brianvogt8125 Жыл бұрын
Talking to umpires is not (and never has been) against the rules. Players are entitled to calmly request an explanation or clarification. Disputing a decision of an Umpire is a reportable offence under Law 22.2.2(k), and is amongst several offences against umpires listed in Law 18.8.2 resulting in a Free Kick.

I've hated the 'dissent rule', as a spectator it's frustrating because all we see is a free kick given for no physical reason. But actually hearing grown men whinge and swear and yell at the umpires changes my opinion a bit. If anyone spoke that way in an office, it'd be a shortcut to a meeting with HR and a boot out the door. I think everyone can agree nobody should speak that way to anyone. I do however, hate when a dissent free kick is given against a player just politely asking the question. Umpires shouldn't abuse their authority either.

Agreed, it’s a really hard thing to officiate. You’ve got two teams of players who are emotionally invested in the game and are doing everything they can to win, and you’ve got 3 or now 4 people who have to officiate everything going on. I have massive respect for the guys and gals that do it, but I think their own association makes their job 10 times worse. Every year there’s a new interpretation of a rule, or a new rule to add to the massive list, and then they go and pull stunts like ANY response from a player is suddenly dissent. 50m penalty to Harris Andrews for putting his arms out? All because their boss said they had to crack down on any and all dissent.
@cstubberfield29 Жыл бұрын
@@_tim Mate if I could like your comment twice, I would! 100% correct and perfectly articulated. Big respect to the umpires. I can't imagine doing my job with an average of ~50,000 people watching on, half of them booing me every 12 seconds for no apparent reason. Would take a lot of mental fortitude to run out there and do that job. But also yes, absolutely agree, their organisation adding new rules constantly and even changing the interpretation of the rules regularly throughout a season makes it very hard on them to do their job. But then there are times they make absolute horror errors such as the Andrews incident, which was truly a horrendous stuff up (and I'll admit I was yelling my head off albeit a little bias as a Lions supporter who was at that game). Funny how some of the best parts of the sport are also the worst parts at the same time. Booing is contentious and always discussed in the media, and situations like the Horne-Francis or Goodes booing is upsetting to many, but is also what makes the game have such a renowned atmosphere...
@imalwaysright Жыл бұрын
The players aren’t mic’d so you’re not hearing what they say to the umps. Some of these made me look at players differently.
@bentheswitchsportsfan06 Жыл бұрын
Umps get hated worldwide for stuff like this but it's a fact that it's always hard to be an official without being booed or doing stuff wrong when, in reality, it's becuase umps are human too. But yeah, removing the dissent rule would make the AFL even better!
