Austell, GA September 4th, 2022. The Norfolk Southern Atlanta North District.

Sunday September 4th, 2022. After some suggestions from fellow railfans I decided to go to Austell, GA to check out the rail action. Upon arrival I was greeted by a nice young man who informed me that I picked a great day. Today would not only offer a lot of trains but also an Amtrak Heritage unit, a couple of KCS units and the grand finale, the UP 1983 Western Pacific Heritage Unit. Austell did not disappoint, but the rain had me off my game a little. It was pretty good drizzle for most of the day and I still managed to get a nice sunburn.

Rail traffic is BUSY. Highway traffic, well… it can be tricky. But not bad.

It’s mostly word of mouth. Join Facebook pages for your local subdivisions. We have many chat groups for the Atlanta and surrounding area. It’s very beneficial. Plus me, and about 3 other guys have base radios in our houses along our local rails. We’re spaced about 20 miles apart and relay info to the group.

@@LancesLens For the set up I use a Yaesu FTM-3100r scanner made for the VHF radio frequencies which can help receive the railroads the best along with Dave’s Outdoor TrainTenna (DPD Productions is the company name for the actual product). Both of those are connected by a coax cable with the following connectors. N Male (for the antenna) to Crimp PL259 Male (for the Yaesu radio). The cable is LMR-400. You’ll also need a ac to dc power supply for the radio to covert ac to dc electric. I set mine up in my guest room closet and rolled a hole int the attic. I mounted the antenna on a vertical roof support.

@@LancesLens I also use a Bluetooth device plugged into the audio Jack of the radio that pairs to Bluetooth headphones. That way I can listen to the radio in a different room
