I attended MCRD San Diego in 1989. Some funny things: 1. They were making a boot camp movie so film crews followed us around the whole 12 weeks. When you first get off the bus and stand on the yellow footprints you’re freaking out. Until they put us back on the bus and do it again from another camera angle! 2. I was 5’10” and 120 lbs. I was placed on double rations, so I had to eat twice as much as everyone else, in the same time. 3. My worst screw up was during the Company Commander’s inspection. He asked me a question and in my zeal to sound off loud, I accidentally spit in his face. He just chuckled, but the DI didn’t take it so well. 4. I don’t remember gas chamber as too bad. It was way worse out in the fleet. MCAS Cherry Point, where I was stationed, had a chemical trail with barb wire and other obstacles to get through. They once popped a CS grenade right between my legs when I was crawling under the barbed wire. That was so strong that all my exposed skin was burning. I got my mask on, but it still sucked. 5. During a hump at Camp Pendleton we were resting on the beach. An honest to God unopened Dr. Pepper can washed up not 10 feet from me. I was jonesing so hard for that, but with deuce gear and full pack I couldn’t move quick and stealthy enough to grab it before a DI saw me. He was not pleased. 6. During the final few weeks we picked up a new DI, apparently fresh from the DI school. He was marching us to chow one night and got lost. He was pretty exasperated and had the guide call out directions at the intersections to get there. 7. As boot camp progresses the DI’s gradually become more chill and more human. We had a short Puerto Rican DI who was hard as nails and constantly scared the crap out of us. He could climb the ropes by using two ropes with just his arms. Towards the end after dinner he marched us someplace quiet, formed a school circle, and took his Smoky Bear cover off. There we found out he was a huge comic book collector and he taught Sunday School at his church. 8. The night before graduation we had a talent show. Our senior DI found out that I could do a perfect impression of one of our DI’s and he had me do it, and he put his Smoky Bear on my head. It was pretty awesome and crazy funny.

Our DIs were hard as nails right up until the end. Talent show???? WTF I wish we did that. They let up on us MAYBE 10% the last couple weeks. I gained 15 pounds on normal rations. First time in my life I got 3 meals a day. I'll be honest, I hated the Marines. Bunch of chest thumping half-wits.

Our senior DI hated our guts. We were his first class and we didn't do well in initial drill. Things snowballed from there and he was harder on us the further our platoon got to graduation. We ran between activities in the Crucible and were always there 20 minutes prior to other platoons. In the 20 minutes we did side straddle hops, push ups, etc. Needless to say there was no school circles that lead to fun or talent shows. MCRD Parris Island 3rd Battalion

They break the seal to allow for the contaminated air to get in their mask. Once they have contaminated air in their mask, they reseal then clear their mask of contaminated air by blowing that air out of their mask. Think of it like this, once you get the command of "GAS! GAS! GAS," a Marine will don their mask. But, they could have contaminated air inside their mask, to which they have to clear it. That is why they break the seal.

ya the DI at the end was a Sgt and seemed to not have any deployment luck only having three ribbons but he is a Senior drill instructor you can identify that by a Black belt. DIs with green belts are their subordinate (rank isnt always dependent upon whos in charge as drill instructors), and DIs with no belts are usually Chief DIs or Drill Masters (senior to any belt). the "PB&J" uniform is part of our Dress uniforms like our dress blues, white pants (Staff NCOs/officers or marines stationed at 8th&I(commandants house) only wear them) or blue pants are dress uniforms green pants are service.

I believe the Marines call those light brown uniforms “Charlie’s!”
@Danny_States4 жыл бұрын
The ones that the DIs predominantly wear are Service Charlies. The title and order of the uniforms are based on the color of the trousers (pants) and/or coats and if the khaki shirt is long sleeve or short sleeve. For the Service uniforms it decends from Alpha to Charlie (Long sleeve w/ Coat, long sleeve, short sleeve), while the Dress Blues worn during graduation and other like ceremonies decends from Alpha to Delta (Coat w/medals, Coat w/ribbons, long sleeve, short sleeve). The sleeve length of the khaki shirt is based off of daylights savings time (DLST= short sleeve, Standard= long sleeve). Hopefully this over explanation helps a little.

A good recruiter will run an IST during DEP and they will have an idea where these kids will be. Help them build up before they get to MCRD.

It’s just the tradition of training with the bayonet...symbolism. Also the black part of the pugil stick represents the stock of the weapon and red is the bayonet.

The military is not rasist. It’s just that there are barely any females who sign up for training,and then some of them don’t make it,so only a few thousand graduate. And then think of the deployment rate,and then casualties. Not enough women in the military for them to go cross country

During the Crucible you are given 2 and a half MREs, thats it. You will have to Ration your food on your own, if you eat all your MREs in 1 day thats it they're not giving u anymore MREs.
