Join us today as we explore the fourth and final novel of W.G. Sebald. Austerlitz is a melancholy meditation on the dark side of human history, with chronological and geographical mazes that are as haunting as they are compelling. In this episode we hold a digital seance in order to have a "conversation" that spans time and space.

Austerlitz is one of my favorite books. It is very difficult for me to say exactly why, but I listened to the audiobook, I ordered a paperback to refer to and so I could see the photographs, and then I ordered a copy for my brother, feeling sure that he would appreciate it. It turned out that he was already a fan of Sebald, but this was the only book of the author that he had not read, so, a fortuitous gift. The way that that Sebald deals with history, and the persistence of past events, but illustrating it through peripheral channels I find fascinating and compelling, and absolutely haunting. I am so sorry that he died at the age that he did. I would love to have read his later books. Thanks for this video.

Great video. Read this book a few years ago. My feeling of alienation and estrangement while finishing it seem to match your assessment of it. Recently read Man’s Fate by Malraux which was amazing. Also Pessoa’s Book of Disquiet. Those might be interesting to review.
