I had a teacher in primary school with the Allegro Special LE in metalic green. I liked it a lot. Jeremy Clarkson forgets that when people chose the Allegro they chose it for them and not for him.

Had the Blue one back in 1985, as i remember the seats were a striped grey color . Wish i still had it (: My Dad had a Marina in Asteral Blue. Its funny how brochures give you all the information engine size clutch etc, now on modern cars the book tells you not to drink the brake fluid!

In 82, I bought myself the Allegro Equipe .... Immaculate it was .... Only 18 months old with 9 thousand miles on the clock .... Quick with a 1750 engine and twin SU's .... I modified the car a little by fitting K & N air filters with a branch exhaust manifold and through exhaust from Janspeed .... I got over 120 mph out of the little beast and kept it until 1989 ....

Thanks for reviewing this car - since owning an Allegro years ago, I became a firm fan! I had mine for 11 years, and sold to buy a huge estate car, 20 years ago. But I still miss my Allegro! Incidentally, I am very taken with the beige seats with a brown stripe! That is actually like on MG sports cars! I would have irdered a vermillion car, and have these seats put in! But you are right, the green IS nice.

I choose definitely the blue color. Make it more "dynamic". 🤗

Although the ADO 16' s Innocenti-built IM3-j4-J5 proved to be quite popular in Italy, the Allegro-rebadged Regent - 1300, 1300L and 1500L - were abosolutely ignored by customers and discotinued in 1974 after than less than two years on the market. The Allegro was brought back into Italy by BL in 1976 and was imported until 1980. No chance of seeing special edition in Italy due to the limited impact the car had on the market. Blame the quirky styling, the lack of a hatchback and the popularity of other cars offerded by competitors such as VW Golf, Fiat Ritmo (Strada in the UK), Talbot Horizon, Renault 14, Ford Escort and Opel Kadett (Vauxwall Astra in the UK). Thanks to share your video and give me a new perspective on this unloved car over here in Italy

This could be the forerunner to the fully equipped and twin-carbed 1750cc Allegro 'Equipe' - a silver two-door with special alloys, a sporty metal steering wheel and thick, jazzy red and orange stripes up the sides (which most buyers removed!). It was on sale just before the series 3 Allegro came out.

I also would choose the green LE ) All the LE's I remember seeing years ago where green) the Allegro also seemed to be a popular car with nuns . I often used to see nuns driving them . Then they seemed to move on to Austin metro's) as depicted in the film, nuns on the run . Which stared the late great Robbie Coltrane. & Eric idle

Quite a good spec when you consider what features or lack thereof compared to an Allegro Deluxe. Nice colour combinations, makes it a very attractive option.

I did own a Allegro 1500 special) in 1990) it wasn't the LE) version though) it was light metallic blue with a dark blue vinyl roof and Blue velour seats. It drove really well" and out of all the ageing Allegro's I owned in the late 80's and early 90's it was my favourite. Thanks for the video/ review/

I saw your 1979 Triumph Dolomite 1500 SE brochure, they would have similar price, becauce BL always priced the Triumphs higher than the Austins. And since I'm practical I would picked Allegro Special L.E in blue.

These were a bit nicer than the standard Allegro.

I was young but I remember they sold really well. If they made 6000, thats 10% of total Allegro sales in the UK that year, a hit for Austin Morris, especially as the 1500 didn't sell that well, it was mostly 1300 models that sold.

These were nicer than the ordinary Allegros. I'm so sad that I can even remember the colour code for Astral Blue was JMR.

@5:35 My sister's VW Polo from 2007 does not come with either a boot light or a locking filler cap, both very surprising omissions.

Yay! I saw the Saturday Special episode on Saturday night here in Cagayan de Oro City Mindanao Philippines. I know that the Austin Allegro was much maligned in the UK, but I saw a video recently that said that it was actually good compared to many of its rivals which were running four speed manual transmissions and had rear wheel drive with leaf springs on the rear suspension. Of course, the main criticism was that BL management refused to allow it to be a hatchback, saying that it would take sales away from the Austin Maxi. What bizarre thinking, because the Maxi was an older design with a larger 1750cc engine. Because the standard version of the Allegro came with a four speed manual transmission and either a 1.3 litre or 1.5 litre engine, I wouldn't see it as a direct competitor for the Maxi. However, the BL plughole of doom strikes again. It's certainly true that side stripes made your late seventies car very special. Just like my 1978 Toyota Corolla coupe in mustard gold with black side stripes. Certainly not fast, but it looked good.

great video as always. I totally forgot about this special edition. I do like the Allegro, i know a lot of people don't but a lot of them haven't driven one. I have driven a 1300 and a 1500 and both were nice cars. They had nice suspension which gave the soft ride, not quite like a Citroen of the time but it was good enough for what was a normal family saloon. I love the seats in this, they look very funky and i love the paint, i must admit i don't know which one i would choose out of these 2 colours. They both are really nice. I currently own a Citroen C4 that is similar in colour to the green one here so i guess i would go for the green one. Didn't the MGB have an LE special edition too?

Another terrific vid, if you have the time, have a look at the ‘Old Classic Car’ you tube channel. He has a vid of a recent BL/BLMC meet at Gaydon which a had a Blue Allegro LE on show alongside some very unusual variants of the BLMC models. Always a very knowledgable commentary so I generally learn as much as I do on your channel !

Look, let’s get down to it, shall we? The only thing that could possibly improve an Allegro, the younger and fatter cousin of its horrendously ugly alter communist ego, the Trabant, is a 2000 ton power press. 😂
