I think people focus so much on Austin's voice, which is indeed very good, that they tend to forget that the rest of the group are also RIDICULOUSLY talented. Rob just has one of those voices that can go from country, to soul, and now to opera and do them all seamlessly.

I went to school with Austin. He WAS a Musical Theater major but the training at OCU was centered around opera and classical singing, followed by classical musical theater. I remember auditioning and we couldn’t sing anything more modern than 1976 LOL. Very different to most MT programs (hence Chenoweth’s amazingness). While not the major itself the MT kids would have to sing a LOT of opera/art song and were required to audition for all operas as well. That said you can never fully remove the glorious Georgia out of Austin’s voice 😅- who wants that anyway!?

You know how you always refer to Gospel Rob when he has a big soulful part in one of Home Free’s songs? Well I’d like to introduce you to Opera Rob. I’ve been calling him that for quite a while now. I heard him playing around with his operatic voice in a behind the scenes video once a long time ago and I asked him about his opera training a couple years ago. His college degree is in vocal performance, which is primarily opera. On certain songs I can hear Opera Rob sneaking in…if you listen carefully you can hear it in the Sea Shanty Medley, and it is even more pronounced when he sings it live. I’ve really wanted to her Rob actually sing some opera for a long time…I’m so glad Austin convinced him to do this. People will never hear him the same way again. I loved your reaction. (Oh, and they are not singing live in the video…the audio you hear the studio recording)

Fun response. Thank you. Austin like Andrea Bocelli and Rob is more in Pavarotti's style. What a singer's musical training is can be very different from what they end up doing professionally. Case in point, Avi Kaplan is a formally opera trained basso profundo who sang pop acapella in Pentatonix and now sings his own compositions in folk rock. Maybe we should get Avi to do a bass aria out of Cosi fan Tutte (The Magic Flute) by Mozart next? Rob is an opera trained tenor. Austin is also formally classically trained but sings in more of a musical theater and pop classics direction. Homefree did not specialize in country until the SingOff talked them into doing it for their competition. Tim and others have talked about it in interviews. He developed his channel as did Tim Foust as their income sources during the pandemic quarantine with no touring for live shows.

Oh I forgot something….I saw Rob’s shirt said Country Rebel. Home Free recorded a few songs there LIVE. It’s in a church and I think it may be this venue!
How a singer positions/relaxes/tenses their body, chest, abdomen, throat, jaw, mouth, lips affects the palette, larynx, etc, and has a massive effect on whether the voice sounds open, round (like Rob singing opera) or more restricted and "thin" (like Rob sounds in other songs). Rob has a different build which aids him (along with considerably more experience singing opera of course) in having a much more "round" tone than what you hear from Austin.

Rob had opera training in college but hasn't sung it in 15 years! Austin had music theater training in college! They only started the country genre for the "Sing Off" as their "gimmick" because there weren't any other country a cappella groups! It's just that we're so used to Rob's silky smooth voice in Home Free (when he's not doing R & B) that it's a shock to hear that deep powerful opera voice in this video!
