The USB killer has so little energy that you would not see anything visually fried. It's the tiny transistors inside the chips that gets damaged. Schematics are VERY much available for these laptops!

The ANX3429 is a DisplayPort to LVDS converter used in applications such as notebooks, tablets, and embedded display systems. It bridges DisplayPort signals (from a graphics processor or other sources) to LVDS (Low-Voltage Differential Signaling) for driving LCD panels. However, specific output voltage levels for the ANX3429 are not typically provided in public datasheets. This is because the ANX3429 primarily outputs LVDS signals, which are differential signals rather than single-ended voltage levels.

1:08:56 The small common mode filter like on the Switch lite is for EMC/EMI noise dampening of the USB-lines. The7M9 component is a ESD protection diode pack.
@zaprodk

13:52 why would there be an inrush of current on the DC-in(not AC) jack? The USB-killer will kill the chipset and ESD diodes may very well lead the high voltage onto the low voltage DC rails, frying the EC, rendering the machine DEAD. Without the EC working, no charging, no power on, no nothing.

13:13 why are you focusing on the AC charger port and the battery circuit, when a "USB Killer" was used? The laptop doesn't charge via USB, so the two share pretty much no circuitry.

@@rincewindtvdinteresting I never heard of these USB killers before and I have dabbled in computer repairs for several years And wondered how they do their deed I was thinking that the USB killer is something that would build a charge in a capacitor and will release when the device is powered down and release through the power lines but then again that should be stopped in it's tracks with diodes since a diode only allows current to pass one way As for sending the current down a data line I'm going to have a safe bet that would wipe out pretty much anything sensitive such as CPU and PCH for example But in this case when he was testing the first laptop and was getting beeps on a coil by tights that shouldn't be happening as those coils are on the positive side so potentially a dead cap that's a well known problem with laptops had a few like that

what about the batteries? they all have circuitry these days to track their lifespan, which is why resetting them sometimes works. maybe the usb kill broke the control ciruit on the batteries. also sending massive current and voltage along data lines not meant to take that could kill things all over, including a cpu. im sure you knew that tho.

That's a good point Because first time I have heard of these USB killers and winder how they work At a guess I assume the capacitor inside stores power while laptop / device is switched on and then once device turned off it release the charge and possibly blow components in it's path But in reality it should stop any reverse current going back into the circuit when the current reaches a diode since diodes are one way But if it sends the charge down a data line then in most cases would be game over as it could take out many components including the CPU and PCH and on most modern laptops they are a bitch to replace

On the Chromebook, those SlimPort ANX3429 (and ANX7447) die all the time. Most of the time it's user error... well... and in this case a Austin is a special kinda user. The chip almost exclusively handles USB-C Power. If I find a white paper on it, I'll pass it on.

The "usb killer" should be standardized in conducted suceptibility standards on USB lines. Tbh the design correction is applicable to any system (an AECQ-101 TVS array woud probably do the job, load dump immunity is standard in automotive EMC). This is becoming ever more common. 2k$+ laptops dying to this should not happen.

@jaym5938
@jaym5938 2 ай бұрын
As he was stating, he doesn't have a schematic to determine whether the 'beeps' (indicating a short to ground) are supposed to be shorts to ground or an actual shorting of the circuit. If he had more experience he wouldn't need a schematic as he can visually map the traces and components... Sometimes you'll hear a beep as the multimeter is settling, but it isn't an actual constant beep that indicates a short.

I mean it becomes obvious because if it makes the wrong sound, he stops and will check it again but I don’t feel myself going along with him. That’s just my take.
