Awesome footage, I was trying to catch these guys responding, but I ended catching engine 35, another nearby station there. Say how can I be able to do ride alongs? I'm going this August with Austin Travis EMS. Who do I talk and is any station optional?

If you don't mind me asking, what shift was this and who was the officer? Was Tommy one of the firefighters? I am curious to know if this was the same company I did my ride outs 4 years ago at station 24. Were you part of a mentor program or did you just signed up for a ride out? Thanks!

I was going to respond to your comment, but I see you edited it. Lol. Anyway I am not sure where you read that, but I think the AFD performs as good or better than the majority of fire departments in the United States.

You have to sign an affidavit in order to be cleared for a ride along just in case you are hurt/killed in one of these exciting ride alongs. That way they are not held liable. Could be wrong for some states/cities but I know here in Florida for the TPD you have to sign one before you go out with an officer on patrol.

How did u get a ride along with Austin is there a website or do u have to know someone in the department ?
@dnovids9 жыл бұрын
Hi, I know someone who works at this station, but I believe there is a way to fill out a form online. Another way is to walk into one of the stations. I believe they have forms you can fill out there as well.

The Austin Fire Department offers ride along opportunities for individuals who are interested in experiencing a day in the life of a firefighter. Ride alongs provide a unique opportunity to observe and gain insight into the daily operations and responsibilities of the fire department. To participate in a ride along with the Austin Fire Department, individuals must meet certain requirements: 1. Age: Participants must be at least 18 years old. 2. Physical Fitness: Participants should be in good physical condition to handle the physical demands of the job. 3. Application Process: Interested individuals need to complete an application form, which can be obtained from the Austin Fire Department website or by contacting the department directly. 4. Consent and Waiver: A consent form and liability waiver must be signed by the participant or their legal guardian if under 18 years old. 5. Background Check: A background check will be conducted to ensure the safety and security of both the participant and the department's personnel. Once the application and background check are completed, participants will be scheduled for a ride along with an Austin Fire Department crew. Ride alongs typically last for a full shift, which can be up to 24 hours, and participants will be assigned to a specific fire station. During the ride along, participants will have the opportunity to observe firefighters responding to emergencies, conducting training exercises, and performing other day-to-day duties. They may also have the chance to ask questions and interact with the firefighters to learn more about their experiences and the profession. It's important to note that ride alongs are subject to availability and may be limited during certain times, such as during high-demand periods or during major events. Additionally, participants are expected to adhere to all safety protocols and regulations during their ride along. Overall, the Austin Fire Department ride along program provides a valuable opportunity for individuals to gain firsthand knowledge and experience of the firefighting profession. It allows participants to see the challenges, teamwork, and dedication that firefighters face daily in serving and protecting the community.

One thing I don't get: I see all the time firetrucks and an ambulance being dispatched to a medical emergency. If it's not a fire and just someone with chest pains, an injury, or difficulty breathing, etc. wouldn't the paramedics be all that are needed? Doesn't that just cause unnecessary wear & tear on the fire truck? Wouldn't it be better for the firetruck to stay at the station so it can be dispatched in case of a real fire or car accident?
@dnovids7 жыл бұрын
Timbrock1000 Hi Tim, So there are a number of reasons to send a fire truck to a medical emergency first or to a medical assist. Here are a few reasons why In a number of towns and cities there are more fire stations rather than available ambulances. For instance, in Chicago if an Ambulance is more than 6 city blocks away a fire truck is dispatched. Firefighters are trained as EMTs or even paramedics. They can offer BLS or ALS care before the ambulance arrives for transport. In a life threatening situation firetrucks carry oxygen, AED, bandaging supplies, and even drugs (nebulizers, narcan, aspirin,etc..) They could pontentially save a life in the time it takes an ambulance to arrive. Another scenario would be for calls where more personnel is needed in a lift assist. Some calls take up to 6 people for lifting or for code calls (cardiac arrests) multiple responders must be used. To your point of the truck getting worn down Responding...the truck experiences wear and tear just from going to the grocery store or to get gas. Also if a fire was dispatched at the same time, the firetruck would most likely be rerouted to that

Timbrock1000 today's modern firefighters respond to almost every emergency. They are also EMT's.. essentially Jack of all trades.

Fred Reutzel Sorry just saw this. How was yours, which station did you ride out with?? Kind of obsolete now but my advice would be to have fun, and learn as much as you can. And ask to take a vid only if the moment feels right. I've been on a few with AFD and CFD. This night we had two calls. How did yours go?
@reutzelfred7 жыл бұрын
dnovids Hi thx for the feedback. Went out with Station 8. We had about 7 calls between 1230/2200. Had the time of my life. It was a wonderful experience. The crew of Battalion 3-Engine 8-and Ladder 8 we're very welcoming. Lots of action at the station as well with probationary FF's training and the other usual activities. Plus they made an excellent dinner. Hope to do it again in the future.

Quick question. Why do some firefighters wear those headsets?
@dnovids10 жыл бұрын
Firefighters wear the headsets while in the apparatus so they are able to hear fellow firefighters over the response sirens, traffic, and other noises. All personal also remain updated through the headsets on current or new information regarding the call as they are responding.
