If this engine was machined and have grit left behind . I would never ever keep using the same towel Each pass will require a new towel until it is clean and if the places that dont show being clean the best thing to do is to take the parts to a transmission shop and they might clean the parts and block in there automatic washing machine for you . Ever part have to be cleaned and nothing left behind . The last thing you want is grinding material left behind in the block and a towel will not get it all out .

It's like cleaning a gun barrel. You have to keep changing the pads with every pass.
