Austin's Calarts Sketchbook 2016 (Rejected)

My sketchbooks that I sent off to Calarts as a part of my portfolio. For those who watch my vlog, this video is actually a part of the holiday vlog that I have yet to upload but I figured I'd post it anyway.
The first sketchbook is a "Rendr" sketchbook (amazing paper quality) and I highly recommend it. I did half of that sketchbook in like a week though because I was behind so DON'T BE ME. I had a great time doing these sketchbooks and I'm excited to learn even more!

There wasn't enough life drawing and observations. You can't just draw stylized and cartoonized work without showing you know the fundmentals.

but there were multiple pages of him drawing in the dojo and the usual "cafe" drawings, aren't they considered life drawings? I've seen accepted Calarts sketchbooks with gesture drawn in cartoon form too... wow damn confused af with what Calarts wants

Jay Ddragon However, most of the drawings were more illustrative that actual life drawings. When you check out an accepted sketchbook, compare one page of a life drawing from that to the rest of his. The way he stylized the observational was kind of... off. I don't know why I feel that way, but it just does.

Just go to Cal Arts animation program and print out what they want to see in your sketchbook. It should help you more.

This art is so unique and filled with personality. It is a shame it was rejected, but I say keep trying! You definitely have a lot of personality uniqueness and spunk! Its the kinda art I wanna just see in all my social medias. Even in cartoons and games. It just looks that good. Good luck though!

"wow this is so good why was this rejected!!" Good art doesnt mean youre a good student guys. Art school want to see that they can TEACH you, they youre willing to try new things but also learn basics of art fundamentals. The sketchbook was good art style wise of course but it lacked in exploration of mediums and anatomy studies.

actually I heard calarts is really lax, and most of the students have to teach themselves in "independent studies."

maybe you didn't draw enough from life. They want their sketchbooks to be Mostly life drawing, yours felt like it had more or less an equal amount of life drawing vs characters/film stuff? Which is fine for a sketchbook in general, but not really what they're looking for (based on my conversations with a rep and research done on it). In terms of technical skill and style you're awesome, but you just didn't draw enough of what they're looking for. Also drawing the environment that the people/animals are in for a lot of those would've helped! (I know this is an old sketchbook, but I'm putting this here to maybe help someone who stumbles across this and is looking at sketchbooks for inspiration for their own)

ok. so near the end are realistic and body part exercises. These are done better than most I have seen. It should be accepted. Yeah maybe most of it was cartoonism, but I whole heartedly think this sketchbook 100 percent deserves to get in. they should have just said they need more realism or something, or specified it in their prompts lol this is a win from me.

+MONEYVAL9 coud be that he didn't draw enough anatomy figure draws. Plus there isn't enough variety. Watch the accepted ones and compare. You'll see. He draws wonderfully, but the school wants to see variety and for artists to achieve the basic drawings.

+Joy Kennedy I want to go to Calarts so cab you please explain to me what do you mean by variety. Do you mean using things like markers, paint, pastel etc.? Or the type of things he drew such as people, animal, plants etc.?

If you're applying for the character design, you should really fill your sketchbook with fluid gesture drawings, character designs with exaggerating expressions, animals (humanized or realistic), storyboarding, draw in perspective, plants, landscape, emphasize on color, value, and tone. And yes, use different mediums like markers, paint or pencil/pen. You should definitely focus on character design, human anatomy, and gesturing. Don't just draw random drawings, try integrating them. Make the drawings feel together. Also, experiment with different made up styles. Your sketchbook should be filled completely. If you paint, try painting on a separate paper and paste into the sketchbook so your pages won't ripple. Check out Dana Terrace sketchbooks on youtube, she's an amazing artist and animator. She went to SVA and worked on Gravity Falls. Check out "accepted calarts sketchbook (chia) as well. Keep looking at accepted sketchbooks and pay attention to the variety and fluidity of the drawings. Try to draw a good balance from imagination and from reference. Hope that helped.

This sketchbook is beautiful! Idk why it got rejected... I know a lot of people's sketchbooks get rejected because there is a lack of variety in their drawings so maybe try drawing more buildings and scenery? I love this though

Only reason I could see why you got rejected was that there was a lot of white space. I feel like you could have Jam packed your sketchbook more. To show you can pump out as much as possible. Like I saw a few white spaces where that I just felt were empty and I personally was itching for a drawing to fill those spaces. Also maybe adding more color and experimenting.

Do you know how idiotic you sound?The accepted sketchbooks I've seen were just as unique as this one.The reason that he might not have gotten in was because of the lack of color and that he didn't really draw nude people as much.This has nothing to do with the fact that the school was founded by Disney himself.The animation industry is a competition to be unique and creative,not to do the same style over and over again!so yeah.. you've missed the whole point of the acceptance process.

I am in no way claiming to have a higher understanding of art or CalArts; but I've been conspiracy boarding all the things that sketchbooks have in common that get accepted for the last few years and some things I noticed were: a lack of coloring, and a shortage of original storyboards and environments and then the relative indiversity of mediums. Your art is still amazing and I am not trying to take away from it- I hope you find what you want

Wow, thank you so much! Honestly, by the time I made this video, I was mostly self-taught so I didn't use any books, personally. However, I did recently purchase "Drawn to Life" and I'm borrowing my friend's "Framed Ink," which are both really helping me think more like a filmmaker rather than just an artist. Also check out Karl Gnass' figure drawing demos on youtube! I'm in his classes now and he's amazing!

There also aren't very many observational drawings inside. But then again, I probably shouldn't be saying this stuff because I suck at drawing and this dude is honestly a god at drawing.

+Seaboobee I typically don't use graphite since I don't like the smudging, but I did use it a little bit in my black sketchbook. But yeah, markers and pens for the most part haha

Just a bit curious! Are you trying to get in to Calarts because you don't like it at Sheridan? I got into Calarts before, and had to decline because of my (then) economic situation.. But I'm applying this year to both Calarts and Sheridan just to have options! If it's not to personal, why are you trying to get into Calarts??

+erohadia Hi! Calarts was actually my first choice, but I didn't apply last year and I got into Sheridan and fell in love with it! Sheridan's amazing, and I probably will stay regardless, but I'm applying just to see if I can get in, and just to have the option to go if I do. :)

Not gonna lie, I underestimated the school at first but the teachers and student body here are amazing and I never expected to love it as much as i did. Also it's cheaper, which is honestly why i'm (probably) gonna stay, but it's really just down to personal preference. Feel free to message me if you have any more specific questions. The art was great, far greater and is an accepting role. Yet halfway through the sketchbook all we see is creative malformations of the human body, getting accepted doesn't mean drawing the best of what you know, it's blowing the seers away with every.page flip, if the last page was a human, it shouldn't be a human again. It should have been a large and intricate landscape portraying your understanding of depth and foreground. And also from this book I find a lack of your understanding of color mediums, color something in and they will judge how you place the colors and how it enhanced the feel of your drawing. Every page should be the artist aka you exploring a completely different medium, usually accepted artists who hand in two sketchbooks are not doing that to show more art, it's to usually use hard and heavy forms of painting, watercolor, oil, or acrylic doesn't matter, they just want to see it. And the disney stamp? Gave me a sense of rooted inspirations of which the seer could have critisized you on the moment they lay eyes on the black cover. Overall the art work was outstanding yet lacking in other forms of art, angles, depth, color, and readable expression.
