Adults-Only First Class Lounge
This car is for adults who are 14 and up only.
The Rippling Stream was built by the Budd Company for the New York Central System in 1949. It was part of a multi-car order under lot 9663-023. The Rippling Stream has 10 sisters Forest Stream, Gulf Stream, Rapid Stream, Boulder Stream, Crystal Stream, Woodland Stream, Swift Stream, Mountain Stream, and Rainbow Stream. It was common to give cars the same last name and have a theme in a multi-car order. The Rippling Stream was in the consists of the Ohio State Limited, the Chigagoan, and the Pacemaker, all classic trains of New York Central’s Great Steel Fleet.
The original car number was 10623 and was re-numbered to 3209 for Amtrak in 1974, and finally found it’s home at ASTA.
The Rippling Stream boasts a 22 seat open lounge and 5 compartments

Tips from our experience: (October 2024)
The train will leave on time or even a few minutes early. We saw a couple running to the gate as we were leaving. The train did stop, but all 200-300 people on the train were probably watching them!
The ride can be a bit bumpy in places. Walking around isn't that easy. If you want to walk from train car to train car, they do allow it. But be careful about stepping on the yellow caution paint...you could lose a foot!
In warmer temperatures/summer, the air conditioners will be slow to cool. Once the train is moving, it seemed to work better.
There is a car with concessions. Our car (Rippling Stream) had snacks and drinks. They do not allow alcohol in the cars.
We ate at El Rancho, Mexican food. It seemed like a lot of people were going to the restaurants listed on the Austin Steam Train website. You may need a reservation for those restaurants. For El Rancho, we called but were told that we did note need a reservation.
If you watch the gunfight show in summer or when it's warmer, there is no shade in the bleachers to watch. There are a few trees behind it, but you won't be able to see well.
The office will be closed when you arrive back to Cedar Park. If you need to use the bathrooms, there are some outside as you get off the train and go through the gates.
The volunteers were great! They had a lot of knowledge about the train and vintage pricing. It was very fun!
