I love this one...And you're right...As a skater of 40 years so much time is spent looking back at images of skaters and locations and spots, and where photos were taken and how they were taken, and the ways that they were shot to make sure that we're not stepping over one another and preserving how iconic those moments and times, and people were. We're curating were responsible for that history and unspoken yet self-imposed etiquette that exists in our culture. And that's in surfing and BMX and snowboarding, and so many other subtle cultures that we see where if a camera is being pointed and someone is performing, we preserve that and we protect it and we hold it close to our heart!

Honestly great stellar documentary photos. Chinese culture on American soil is so bewildering and interesting to me after having lived in Asia before with an HK family. Also loved the India/Darjeeling trip videos. Your unique lens on those videos makes them evergreen and has a longlasting soothing effect. Anyone with a happy soul will love your content & body of work forever! ♥🧧

I agree completely with your take on shooting the same shot as everyone else. I will do it if I'm shooting for someone else though. They wont get that shot from the other photographers so its my job to get it for them. For my personal work I like to watch and be happy for the other photographer that they got a good shot.

I appreciate this video, especially the part about not getting the same shot as another photographer and how people are just pulling the trigger to pull the trigger without not much thought going into it. I went to school for photography, and learned so much about what it means to make an image versus take a photo. A lot of people think that a "technically well-shot photo" is a good photo, but there's so much more to it. Making an image is stopping a moment. You've probably read Camera Lucida, but wanted to drop in this quote: “Each photograph is read as the private appearance of its referent: the age of Photography corresponds precisely to the explosion of the private into the public, or rather into the creation of a new social value, which is the publicity of the private: the private is consumes as such, publicly.”

1:04 THIS! I always wondered why New York photographers rarely show up to social/cultural public events. When I moved to a big city for a year, I checked out the culture secretary website regularly to stay up to date with different events, festivals, etc. Regular street photography is awesome but public special events always have really interesting stuff to capture and obviously good memories that come with them.

Hi Austin, I have been a viewer of your videos since your visit to Mumbai, and I love the way you capture both dull and intense moments as you go by your day. Your videos have quickly turned into a staple lunch time watch since its just the right amount of distracting (in a good way) and not too flashy for my taste. As a creative person who makes music, I feel I have a good sense of what could turn out to a great picture or scene, but I am not abe to convert that into a grade A photo since my photography skills suck. I have an iPhone 13 at the moment and know that a lot can be done with it, but what would you recommend I do to get pictures which are more your style? Cheers

press photography is an entirely different game, these people don't see photography like many others they have to jump in each-others way to get the photo they need thats how they get paid for instance. They very much lock onto getting the shot of the 'obvious subject'. Its all about speed and clarity.

Been following for a while now love everything you do and I feel your style is unmatched. One thing that you said in this video towards the end about not taking the same photo. I’m at the point in my photography now that I agree 100% with what you said but when your a photographer starting out I think it’s is a good idea to try to get the same shot as someone you admire as a learning process. Like once your getting close to the image you saw and love you boost your confidence and learn at the same time setting and whatever. Just wondering do you agree with that or have other ideas or suggestions to help improve. Also I’m not talking like I’m a pro or anything I’m still learning trying to get to your lever of photography. Let me know what you think

Hey man, this year I came across a very interesting photo book that I thought you might like: "Falkland Road Prostitutes of Bombay" by Mary Ellen Mark, which was photographed between 1978 and 1979. It’s not the easiest book to digest; her portraits are raw and unfiltered. However, I believe it’s a beautiful piece of photojournalism and portraiture. If you get a chance, I recommend checking it out. Keep it up, and have a great day!
