Hi Austin, GREAT video. Your mom is a lucky woman. VERY thorough job. Im 71 and am miticulous like you are. I own a gen4 prius & am changing my tranny fluid next Spring. I have low mileage but going on 6yrs old. You ARE wrong, I hung in for the end because it's so informative. I sub'd & gave u a 👍. Hope to see more prius videos. Thank you. Great shape underneath. I unfortunately live in the rust belt (PA). I can keep cars running, but they rust out. I HAVE been getting mine undercoated.🤞

I just replaced the flywheel damper by pulling the engine because the springs got loose. Additionally, replaced front and rear crank seals, valve cover gasket , cleaned intake and exhaust valves, transmission fluid and engine oil..

Very conscientious service and thorough condition report. The oil sample report would be like blood lab work to indicate potential health issues. On average what does the lab report cost? If it identifies and helps you correct a potential mechanical problem it would be well worth the price.
@AustinCoulson2 ай бұрын
30$ for each test so 60$ for the engine and trans. I have saved many thousands of dollars by finding problems early. worth every penny

@@AustinCoulson I recall test reports you did in the past on a diesel engine that was interesting. Worth the cost.

Awesome video. Thank you for all the details and very useful analysis. An additional touch that would be very helpful is if you provided your estimate of cost (in time) that each service item would take (based on a professional shop). My 2012 Prius is at 200,000 Km, and I want to determine what it would cost to take it to 300,000 Km. Thank you!
@AustinCoulsonКүн бұрын
This was around 430$USD in parts. I normally build custom food trucks instead of basic mechanic work, so I am not really sure what an average shop would charge for this job. They probably wouldn't want to clean the EGR, but replace it instead.

First time Prius owner. Loving the 54mpg. Only 25k miles thus far, but I would love to see 10x that under my ownership. We are trying to be diligent with the maintenance. Is there anything else not in the manual (besides replacing tranny fluid) that you would start as a habit now?
@AustinCoulson2 ай бұрын
Oil sampling is the biggest recommendation I have. With that alone you can track internal engine wear and likely find head gasket issues very early on. My other recommendation is to follow the mpg very carefully. Your mpg is directly linked to how hard your drivetrain is working to move you down the road. A drop in your mpg indicates that something is working harder than it was before (like a degrading battery or losing tire pressure) and let's you know its time to start investigating
@jconnar2 ай бұрын
What about the battery? is it really not necessary to replace it for 150,000 miles? priuses are famous for the fact that it overheats. because the ventilation system would be clogged

Definitely not worth ever preemptively replacing the battery. When the battery does start to degrade I plan to film a video showing how to replace the individual cells instead of the entire battery pack, but the battery on my Prius as well as my Mom's are still in perfect shape. I've e seen some go 300k miles with no issues, even in Phoenix.

Where do you buy parts for toyota website or store name please ??
@AustinCoulson27 күн бұрын
@@zeljkodjukic5889 I got most of the parts from rock auto except for the trans fluid. I had to go to a dealership for that, as they were cheaper than Amazon or rock auto

Zero leaks anywhere on this rig. I probably should have addressed that as well as how to tell what condition the battery is in

Is cleaning the battery cooling fan still a thing on the 3. Gen?

It is. I should have addressed battery maintenance but I am waiting for a few cells to die in the main pack to show how to diagnose and replace those

What brand water pump are u using? Do you recommend toyota original water pump?

Toyota used an Aisin water pump from the factory, and I recommend using the OEM. You can get it from Aisin or Toyota dealerships, the only difference is the price.

How much are the batteries in those cars to replace?
@AustinCoulson2 ай бұрын
I wouldn't replace the entire battery, I would isolate the bad cells and change those individually
@buydirectusa49542 ай бұрын
@AustinCoulson do the repair shops do that, or is it a DIY job?
@AustinCoulson2 ай бұрын
@@buydirectusa4954 I don't think most repair shops do that. It would have to be a place that specializes in EV repairs. It's really not that complicated, you just have to be careful around high voltage batteries. I think most shops just install rebuilt battery packs and the rebuilds consist of just swapping out the bad cells.

Factory Toyota parts are the absolute best for your Prius. Seeing all of those aftermarket (trash/cheap) replacement parts, especially the water pump, makes me sad, especially in a video claiming to show you how to make your car "last forever". Ugh.
@AustinCoulson2 ай бұрын
You should see my short on that water pump. It's OEM. The moog sway links are better than OEM. The brembo brakes are better than OEM. The trans fluid is OEM, the wix filters are all better than OEM. Literally everything on that table is OEM or better
