Also, the reason why Sony likely didn't just make a "slim" console now is because they've already got molds for their current design and likely have already manufactured tons and tons of the existing shells. Also, from what I'm hearing it sounds like Sony is going to completely revamp the PS5 again next year to convert it from two SKUs into just one with a separate detachable blu-ray drive which can easily be added in later. This will likely become the PS5 "slim" version and will likely become the version most associated with the system if they then stick with that design even for 2 years because the sales will likely be much higher than these past two years given all the shortages which only just NOW seem to be coming to an end.

But in the case of the slim version, it is true that the motherboard has become smaller, but I still think that a big fan is needed to dissipate the high heat of the ps5. Once, I put the ps5 upright but upside down, and when I entered the game, I don't think it took even 1 minute. I encountered a high temperature message, so I think it's still too early to shrink ؛ ) But Sony engineers must have a plan for heat dissipation in the slim version

@@ItsAkile Yeah, i know that 6nm is less power hungry and running cooler than 7nm. But still, just mesuring the temperature of the cooler doesn't give enough information if the chip is thermal throtteling or if it's able to run at higher clocks for longer.
@ItsAkile
@ItsAkile Жыл бұрын
@@CookieAdam No what I'm saying is besides the processing node, Silicon quality is also a factor that always exsist. "silicon lottery" consoles are built to last under worst case conditions and these SOCs dont' run anything near the 95-105c range to throttle on average for that to make a big deal. You can have 1-2 frame variant normally but only expect similar performance because thats by design. the one concern was that some memory modes were a bit high at 95c and Sony should to better to cool them, havent seen how newer design fair on that point but the SOC is fine.

The biggest problem with coming out with a slim now is it would have to be a whole new mold for a whole new shell. And knowing Sony they would much rather just keep this information to themselves for the foreseeable future and pretend like they need to keep cranking out these massive cases instead of giving us a nice small case instead. If anything I'd say we're at least a few years away even though clearly they've shrunk the internals easily enough to fit in a much smaller one.

“Chunky” is the new “thing” right now. I mean, look at graphics cards. Plus, getting a big console feels like you’re getting more. It tricks buyers who aren’t as tech smart into thinking the device they bought is “powerful” because it’s big and bulky. It’s like the whole industry is going backwards. Rather than smaller and faster component, we’re going back to big and bulky in some areas.

9:40 I do not think the smaller node is cheaper, considering TSMC had a 20% price hike for its chips. Definitely not cheaper, at least on Sony/AMD's side, and I think 7nm and 6nm isn't really different in size on a wafer. It's only cheaper if conditions are met vs previous node: -they can produce more chips per wafer -usable yield per wafer is higher -total average of usable chips per wafer in new node is greater than the old node, and can justify the 20% price hike cost. Then again, the increase in the wafer cost would affect all nodes made in TSMC so it would make sense for AMD/Sony to make it a bit smaller so that they can cram a few more chips in per wafer, and as long as the defect rate of the smaller node isn't worse on the new node, the shift would make sense.
@ms3862
@ms3862 Жыл бұрын
We are long passed the days of smaller nodes being cheaper, that stopped at 45nm. Every time the PS5 node gets smaller now there is a cost increase, the only savings is power draw and heat output so you can use a smaller heatsink or smaller fan
