Agreed with Hill about The Searchers -- particularly at 9:08, when he says, "Nobody has ever really, totally, satisfactorily worked out what the hell The Searchers is trying to say."

I agree about Searchers. I wouldn't list it among my favorite Ford films, my favorite Westerns, or my favorite John Wayne film. And I love certain shots and scenes in the Searchers. It just doesn't hold me dramatically throughout. Certainly, Red River keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The western movies are the father of the social media of all characters or WAI (western artificial intelligence) western regrime as such. It's human and does basic functions, can act very noob or glitchly, but could also have a perfect aim. So assume it means WAI of catalyst. However: If someone is very noob and still appears to be learning to walk and pick up items in the charactors.

I don't worship The Searchers but Hill is too flawed a filmmaker with far too many misses under his belt to diss its qualities. Same goes for Lindsay Anderson. This idea of a seamless, flawless movie is misguided and is not and has never been the point of anything. The Searchers is not inscrutable, a work that no one can quite figure out as Hill, a filmmaker I like, seems to suggest. Like all films, and pretty much everything else that exists, there are many ways to look at it and the whole cannot be boiled down to any one theory or perspective. That is one-dimensional thinking. There's not a lot of layers to a Walter Hill film, he's chiefly a stylist and not too deep. That's one of the great things about his work, it has storytelling and stylistic depth or texture but not exactly the kinda stuff that makes good subject matter for much investigation. He's also not an artist who has grown to a great degree. Hard Times was one of his first if not his very first film but it remains as good or better than anything he made after. Just trying to put some of his comments into perspective.

philmfan Bull. If you watch Hill's "Southern Comfort", it's a commentary on the Vietnam War and American colonialism.

This is an idiotic view. When you criticise a piece of work, you don’t say “but he didn’t make great movies so the criticism is not valid”. This is such an idiotic view. If you want criticise the criticism not the person making it.

@milster Really? It came off that way to me. Sometimes, a filmmaker puts out ideas they don't intend to put out.

A large amount of "hits" aswell. Hill had a superb run of genre films from the mid 70s up to the mid 80s when his output became patchy. Hard Times, The Driver, The Warriors, Long Riders, Southern Comfort, 48 HRS.

Hill could live two more lives and never reach the artistry of Sergio Leone.

Completely different filmmakers, so pitting one against another is silly.
