Only one player I know of who did that, supremely talented but not a big game player at the start of his career, known to choke in the playoffs, until a light bulb came on and he transformed the narrative and became a perennial leader and winner and turned into a HoF player - some guy named Yzerman.

Nothing special about that. What’s rare is to see a talented VETERAN player, perennially failing to win in the playoffs but finding his groove midway through his career like Yzerman. Yzerman was an individual monster of a player with nearly Gretzky-like regular season stats within his first decade with the Wings - but his team continued to lose and he didn’t perform like he can in the playoffs despite his regular season success. But a conversation with Scotty Bowman changed him and he decided winning as a team was more important than individual stats in the regular season. In the 90s, more than a decade into a career where most thought they had seen everything there is to see from Yzerman, he changed the narrative completely. His individual stats dropped off significantly (still good by any normal measure of course) - but the Wings started winning and transformed into a dynasty. That kind of mid-career turnaround is really, really rare. Maybe Ovechkin could qualify? But only barely and only because of his sole Cup win. Yzerman’s story is really unprecedented and unmatched.
