I'm Australian and I don't like the term 'Australasia' because neither Australia nor New Zealand are a part of Asia. At school, I was always taught that Australia was the country and Oceania was the continent, I tend to agree with this.
@WonderWhy9 жыл бұрын
Daniel H The thing is though, the name doesn't imply you're part of Asia. The name "Australasia" is derived from the Latin for "south of Asia".
@danielh97229 жыл бұрын
You're right about that, but somebody who doesn't know the Latin roots of the word Australasia could easily make an assumption that Australia is grouped in with Asia. And even South Asia can should as a part of Asia, like Spain is Western Europe, and still a part of Europe. Oceania is a good name for the continent and islands.
@sirtimidly9 жыл бұрын
Daniel H I get that you think that Oceania is a good name for it but that's not how convention works. You are saying that it is confusing that the continent should have the same name as the country of Australia. But to fix that problem you are suggesting that it should have the same name as the geopolitical region Oceania. You are just exchanging the confusion from one name to another. If you really want a compromise and refuse to have the continent be named the same as something else, it might be best to name it after its continental plate: Indo-Australia. But right now, the continent is perfectly fine as Australia.
@connorhay58239 жыл бұрын
WonderWhy In school in Australia, we are taught that Australia is the country and that Australasia is everything which you described as Oceania. Basically Australasia is everything in our corner, excluding the Indonesian provinces, which we class as south-east Asia. I believe as an Australian, we feel closer to New Zealand, PNG and all the other Islands in Australasia than Indonesia. This is due to Indonesia's ethics and legal system heavily differing from our own, as seen in the recent execution of two of our citizens. So if you were to ask an average Australian what their definition was, it would probably be the same as mine.

@chileo19 жыл бұрын
+wowitsbryce Actually, MOST people are taught the 7 continents model. Almost everyone I have ever met doesn;t call it Oceania. Most is because they were taught "Australia" like most western countries, or some realise that Oceania is in fact a region not a continent. You can call it what you want but technically calling Oceania a continent is wrong based off whats currently accepted and taught as fact. continent noun "any of the world's main continuous expanses of land (Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, Australia, Antarctica)." Calling Oceania a continent completely fucks that definition. Oceania could not be LESS continuous its basically tiny islands and water. I'm just telling you what you think is wrong vs what most of the world considers to be true, thats all.
@pezpeculiar95579 жыл бұрын
+chileo1 Just changing the name of any type of area doesn't change it a single bit. The only reason it is defined that in the dictionary is because there is no exact easy definition, so they do the best that they can and give current examples
@chileo19 жыл бұрын
+wowitsbryce Um no, In Australia they are NOT taught to call it Oceania LOL. How ridiculous would it be for Australians of all people to get their OWN continent wrong. Since they have proper schools and education there, they are taught the 7 continents model like most western countries and most of the world including Russia and China. I have Australian friends I can ask if you really want? I can find you 50000 things defining Australia as a continent, and 50000 things saying why Oceania isnt one. Heres a nice simple one from national geographic for you! www.nationalgeographic.com/siteindex/geography-faqs/ "Oceania is the collective name for the lands of the Pacific Ocean, including Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Oceania is a convenient way to name these areas, which, with the exception of Australia, are not part of any continent. But Oceania itself is not a continent" Heres ANOTHER en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_(continent) "Oceania is often used to denote the region encompassing the Australian continent" How can I tell you, the way you view it, does not coincide with reality or facts. You need to allow yourself to be educated because in this case, I am simply correct and its not a matter of opinion or an open debate. To summarise 1. Australia is a continent. 2. Oceania is not.

***** Geographic science was never as exact as it is today, accurate maps of the world were developed long after continents were named. If one is to categorize continents based on continental shelves, there would be Afro-Eurasia, The Americas, Continent of Hawaii, Continent of Iceland, Continent of Samoa, Continent of the Azores, Continent of the Line Islands and about thirty of so other tiny continents. That's why contrary to popular belief, the UN and the world accepted view of continents for classification reasons do not align, and nor are they intended to align with geological continental shelves. In Europe's case, it comes down to the ancient Greeks. They deemed they had less in common with those directly south (Africa) and those directly east (Asia) than those directly north or west (Europe). They found those to the east, as Aristotle put it as "wanting in spirit" compared to those of the north and west. The Roman Empire and the rise of Christianity (especially Catholicism as oppose to Orthodox) further cemented these massive divides between Europe (who were predominantly Christian) and Asia and Africa who were in the eyes of Rome and eventually the Papal States "un-christian". The massive expansion of The British Empire, the French Empire, the Dutch Empire, the Portuguese Empire, the German Empire, the Spanish Empire, the Italian Empire, the Belgian Empire and the Russian Empire all across the planet brought this form of world classification with them as they caused massive cultural upheavals to other nations and installed their own methods of schooling based along lines of accepted European thought. So as India and Mongolia have very little in common, the influence of the European powers in the 18th and 19th century and their world views has allowed this system to remain the most accepted. Russia is the sticky issue here however. Although it is in both Europe and Asia, the Duchy of Muscovy who become the leading force in the formation of pre-Soviet Russia was culturally European rather than Asian, so they towed the European view of continental classification rather than any alternative. Hope this helps.

As an Australian I was taught in school that Australia was the continent. But all us kids didn’t agree. I remember once in Year 2 the teacher said as well as a country what else is Australia starting with c. There was about 30 guesses some completely wild and when the teacher said it was a continent and everyone was very confused. What continent is New Zealand and the other islands in then? It’s like saying that Canada is in a continent called the United States. I’ve heard other people got taught the right way that Oceania is a continent but officially the continent is called Australia. You would think Australia should be honoured to have the whole continent bear our name but I think that countries can’t also be continents vice-versa so in my opinion, shared by most Australians. Australia is a country and Oceania is the continent.

As a New Zealander, I hate the term "Australasia" for two reasons. Firstly because it lumps us kiwis in with the Australians even though we are and always have be separate. And second, because where the fuck does Asia come up in to it? NZ isn't part of Asia, it should be something like Austral-Zealand. Also, New Zealand is on the largely submerged subcontinent of Zealandia. NZ is, by far, comprises the largest above water portion which New Caladonia coming in second
@WonderWhy10 жыл бұрын
TheWolfHowling Like I said, I think the term 'Australasia' is a redundant term. The subregions of Oceania should be - Australia (the country), Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. That way New Zealand is just part of Polynesia and not part of 2 different subregions. Also, about the name 'Australasia', the name comes from Latin, meaning 'South of Asia'. And since 'Australia' comes from the Latin for 'southern', that's why the names are so similar.

WonderWhy do you think Scotland should be independent from the UK

WonderWhy That's interesting, I didn't know the Australia derived its named from the latin for south. I will admit that I probably had an inkling that it might be something like that due to the Aurora Australis, aka the Southern Lights, but never put much thought into it. Anyway, South of Asia is a stupid term as Asia as the continent is over 44.5m km2, comprising of around 30% to the world's land. Given that arbitrary definition, here are some other countries you could include in Australasia; Cyprus, Madagascar and a large chuck of the Africa continent, everything in the Indian Ocean, Fiji, Tuvalu and even some Alaska islands that swing under Siberian Russia

Four geographical continents including The Americas, Afro Eurasia, Oceania and Antarctica (only the main land being part of the continent). All other places are just islands and not part of any continent including Iceland, UK, Japan, Madagascar and New Zealand. Seven political continents including North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Antarctica. Any land not part of the other six continents are part of Oceania. No lol. It's a state of the USA. How can it be part of a different continent from the country it belongs to? lol Also it's not south-east Asia.
@jamesloughton628 жыл бұрын
+Creed Bratton Actually it can be, just look at France, French Guinea which is basically a state of France is all the way in South America and Three out of the four regions that make up the Netherlands are in the Caribbean so it is possible for Hawaii to be in another continent to the rest of America.

We should just ditch the whole concept of a continent all together and only use geographic regions when we need to generalize.

Some educators say "Australia & Oceania" as the full name. Australia meaning Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, while Oceania is all of the islands like Federated States of Micronesia and Tuvalu and such. Personally, I call it Oceania, but that's because having a country and a continent both called Australia is like having a country in Europe being called.. Europe. You don't have to agree with me though :)
@BigAl2-u7e3 жыл бұрын
Is Oceania really a continent when most of it is literally the Pacific Ocean? Australia is the only sizeable landmass in the entire region that could be called a continent.

In the Swedish language (and many other langauges), there are two different words for continents. One meaning the seven national continents (North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Antarctica), and one meaning the six geographical continents (North America, South America, Eurasia, Africa, Australia and Antarctica). The english language does not have this, but if you count Europe and Asia as different continents, you should also call it Oceania.

In America in the 80s and 90s we wer taught pretty much the same as your second example only Europe was separate from Asia for some reason

In Italian, we recognize Oceania as the continent and Australia as a country, but whatever it's named it will always be a beautiful land. Btw, i don't recognize Israel. Never will.

***** It's just a land, doesn't mean I don't respect their beliefs. Let me clear it up. It's like you live in your house and some governement sends you a letter that you have to leave because they want to give it to another family that lived there before you, even though you bought the house. I'm not Palestinian, but I would be pissed off if someone came to my house and "proclaimed" it to be theirs only because they "worshiped" my house.

***** You should do a tutorial on how to not learn geography. And yes by your comment, you are stupid.

***** You should just keep with your tutorials and leave the real facts to others. Palestine isn't Israel. Isreal was a gift from the americans kicking the Palestinians asses away. Stop watching Fox news and learn something.

I'm Australian and in childhood I learned that Australia by itself is both a country and a continent, with the understanding that all the continents are by nature surrounded by water. So New Zealand and any countries in Oceania lie outside the Australian continent. Also it's a matter of opinion but I've never felt comfortable with the idea that Australia is an island. Technically I guess it fits that definition but I think it's just way too large and it seems paradoxical to me to define it as both a continent and an island.
