Should we keep Australia day on January 26 ?
Today we delve into the controversy surrounding Australia Day, commonly referred to as 'Invasion Day.' The discourse revolves around whether Australians should feel shame about their British heritage or if there's a valid space for celebration. Historical context is provided, shedding light on the foundation of Australia by the First Fleet in 1788 and acknowledging the historical issues of land theft and exploitation of indigenous people by the British Empire.
The discussion extends to the positive impact of British colonization, asserting that Australia has evolved into a leading nation with values such as the rule of law, liberty, and democracy.
The video also addresses the appreciation for indigenous people and their culture, acknowledging existing gaps between remote indigenous communities and the rest of Australia. It explores proposals aiming to empower indigenous communities, promote a strong work ethic, and recognize the limits of state power in addressing social issues. Former CIS colleague and Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price is a leader - rejecting victimhood, separatism, and symbolism in favor of empowerment and a strong work ethic.

Human history is based on concurring territory, this land could of easily been Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese or Chinese (they didn't venture out much). Much like the recent "social movement" with African Americans. Mostly chose to see reality of the development of human society in a particular lens that paints them as victims (rightly so in a sense, its playing out again in the middle east), but at the same time only choose facts that support their argument of victimhood. The reality is usually somewhere in-between in most cases, but feelings and misguided logic (or lack of knowledge) tend to have precedence on the ground level.

@@danpop1714 So, let's consider the scenario where Putin wins in Ukraine. Hypothetically, let's say that Russia takes over all of the territory. Over the course of the next 50-100 years, it removes Ukrainian traditions, language, dialects, important dates and replaces them with Russian ones. It also decides that Ukraine Day is the same day that Putin "civilised" it - all those years ago. Would the Ukrainians be seen as "victims" if they called this out as wrong?

Absolutely. Not in some jingoistic show of pride but being deeply thankful for being born in a country that has given me (a truly average bloke) more than most nations ever could. There is a reason why hundreds of millions of humans on this planet would move here at the drop of a hat. I'm not proud of being Australian. I had no choice in being born here. I've done nothing to be proud of. But I'm bloody thankful for it and I will remember and show that tomorrow. I might not be shouting "Straya carnts!" as I scull beers in 40C heat but I will be celebrating.

This is a day for all Australians to proudly celebrate, the radical few who teach hatred, encouraging division in our country are not worthy of the modern prosperous country Australia now is. If we had a time machine to take these dissenters back to the early pioneering days they would be in disbelief at the hardships our ancestors had to endure in making the foundation of our wonderful Australia.

It’s currently an unusual instance that two beliefs, interpretations can be of importance and value. Or that they can both have merit. That said, in the case of Australia Day it doesn’t seem very reasonable, or objective for a small minority to be so prominent within this discussion. While historically any group being mistreated is loathsome, this hardly elevates descendants of any perceived wrongdoing. Human history is almost entirely made up of differing groups of humans mistreating one another. Yet finding any specific case of this abounding wrongdoing, to attack a celebration that is inclusive across the board embracing all Australians is clearly self-regarding and malicious. This is a day for all Australians to proudly celebrate.❤🇦🇺🦘

The bottom line is the arrival of Europeans on this continent is not something we should be ashamed of or be afraid to celebrate, even if we regret the hardships Aboriginal people faced as a result of it. It was predominately (thought not exclusively) people of European stock who built Australia into the great country is became. That undeniable fact sits uneasily with many on the political Left. To those who object, nothing short of complete disapproval of European settlement of this continent will ever be satisfactory. They will continue complaining for as long as there are people left in Australia who feel some gratitude and admiration for what Europeans achieved with this continent.

We come from every continent on this earth, there is no true owner of Australia, thousands of years ago Indigenous People got on their rafts and came to Australia, Hundreds of years ago convicts were packed into ships and brought here against their will. The past is the past, many, many years before anyone sailed the oceans the earth was one great continent, one land mass & we were many races together as one, now fast forward to the present - we are not one, there is nothing but hatred and racism, we have not changed in the last hundred years, for a very long time the world was prejudice against anyone who had dark skin, now we are prejudice against all those who are white.

So always was is heading for one hundred years, which is I’m afraid a long time in Australian history, unless we’re all pretending the 65,000, or is it now 275,000 years of human history is somehow exclusively claimed to only one small, tiny group of human beings? I’m wondering why it’s not acceptable to celebrate 26th January but it’s acceptable for indigenous to play and exalt the sports and written language that the British brought with them. There’s a large indigenous play group in rugby league, Ash Barty and Evonne and others in tennis, golf, rugby and cricket. Should we also to be expecting the indigenous players to withdraw from these. ALL indigenous languages are using the British alphabet - is that going to be changed? I’m amazed at these white saviour activists and Palestinians who won’t go fight for their own lands but will hijack the indigenous cause. And while I’m at it - Pat Cummins if you feel so strongly about the indigenous cause, then walk the walk and please give up your white privileged position to an indigenous player who could benefit from the opportunity.

The problem is the conservative side of the argument has been kowtowed into silence by our postmodern Ruling Classes. It's a huge injustice and a gross display of ingratitude to the millions of early Australians (including aboriginals) who toiled, suffered and died in order to build this into a modern, successful country. The truth is the life of an aboriginal in 1787 was cruel, brutish and short. They lived in an primordial rut, and where showing no signs of rising out of it when Cook first arrived. The real truth is the arrival of the modern world to Australia was INEVITABLE. It was simply a matter of who showed up first. The real question to all the virtue-signalling Left is: what did they realistically expect to happen in 1788? For the world to just keep sailing by? To keep aboriginal Australia an eternally prehistoric people? Or for Australia to become some sort of aboriginal Jurassic Park?

What does any of this have to do with a day that celebrates Australia? Moving Australia Day is nothing to with cancel culture. It has nothing to do with reducing the importance of January 26th as an day of national significance - aside from all of your bigotry above here. On 26th January 1788, there were people standing on these old boats peering at a new shoreline. There were also people peering out from an old shorelines at these new boats. Australia Day currently only celebrates the former and completely ignores the significance to the latter. So, it seems like a no brainer to me.

Great video Tom. I agree with most of your sentiments. But if we really want to be honest about Australia Day itself, we should acknowledge the current incarnation of the actual day, the national holiday is a relatively new concept. If it were not for Howard Government initiatives, creation of the Australia day council, adding citizenships ceremonies, celebrations, the ABC and Triple J we still might be in that odd place many people were in, back 1988. Many people didn’t even know what the bicentennial was about. Australian’s took great pride in not being overly patriotic or nationalistic like our Americans friends. That we were this egalitarian society not bound by class like the British and we were in a unique position to both learn from the mistakes of these countries and also import those ideals we found complimentary. Up until the mid 1970’s most Australians, if given the opportunity, were embarrassed by our accents (the ABC was) and we most certainly lacked a uniformed national identity shared equally between the citizens of each state. It was not until Hoges or Humphries actually gave us something to be proud of on an international stage, did any semblance of a national identity begin to emerge. All national identity in every country is forged through conflict, internally or externally. Other than playing a role in larger coalitions Australia has never been at war with another country by ourselves, where our independence has been threaten or experienced revolution or even bothered to remove the Royal Family as our head of state. We enjoyed this reputation of almost being lazy, sitting in the sun, cut off from the rest of the world and not much to show for it on an international stage. There is caveats to all these comments but it is also the general truth. Not to be fearful of. Early settlers did commit a genocide against this countries inhabitant when they arrived. For at least 150 to 160 years afterwards we have had policies that largely discriminated against the Aboriginal people. The sad irony with the increased level of protest each year may ultimately mean the day to celebrate Australia Day might actually change in the future. It’s only been going for 20 years or so in its current form so, not much is lost. What will be lost ironically is the acknowledgment that Australia Day was first celebrated by emancipated convicts shortly after new year’s, as a way of poking fun at their colonial British Rulers. Most of whom did not want to be in Australia, taking care of a prison. That’s sad. Unfortunately, the further we get away from history, accepting lies, false narratives (from fraudsters like Pascoe, Wilmot, Troy, Doyle, Fowley, O’Dwyer, Pulver) and the next wave of 500 thousand Australians with European heritage deciding at the next sensis that they too, are also aboriginal, truth about Aboriginal history and colonial history will become a very rare commodity. That’s what is sad. History is important. Our achievements are important. If we really want to be Australian, every Federal election should also have a ballet box requesting the removal of the King as the head of state, changing of the flag and song and colours, maybe changing the day. Emancipated convicts from over two years ago would not be overly joyed to think we still don’t have independence from the United Kingdom, they might think we were lazy, just sitting around in the sun. We are still not really our own country and never will be until this happens. That’s our war just waiting for ALL of us, if we want it!

Well said. Australia Day should be a celebration of what we have become, what we are doing and where we all plan to go, as a great democratic nation. It should recognize the wrongs of the past on all sides, (not just both mind you) as we are not a nation of far more than just two cultures. We are of many and that is our strength. We bring cultural skills from all over the world to drive innovation and progress beyond the basic culture war dogma of the media. Rebalancing our school education and taking away the guilt of a past (that we cannot change) is a start, along with recognizing that bad stuff did happen. Australians shouldn't blindly follow a grand feel-good delusion because it makes us feel a little better about ourselves without having to actually lift a finger to improve our nation for all of its hardest done by citizens. We should keep our day of nationhood and celebrate who we are now not what we were.

The beauty of Aboriginal culture is being slowly poisoned by hate & anger towards the "white invasion," which is now the focal point of Aboriginal history. This constant focus on one aspect puts at risk the rich traditions, customs, & stories passed down for generations of being forgotten. How can anyone deny the reasons to celebrate Aboriginal culture on Australia Day, especially Indigenous people? Where is the pride in their own culture? Just take a moment to marvel at how ANCIENT Aboriginal culture actually is & appreciate how it has survived despite the inevitable challenges & changes that come with social movement. No other culture can boast such a resilient feat, & THAT my friends, is worth celebrating on Australia Day. Aboriginal culture is at the heart of the Australian identity, making us unique & better than the rest. So rather than letting our differences divide us, Australia Day should be a time to come together & recognise all the things worth celebrating in the past, present, & future. "We cannot change the past, but we can choose to embrace a better future". Let go of the negativity & choose to nurture & cultivate this beautiful culture, not just for future generations, but for the sake of its survival.

I would hazard a guess that most countries around the world have been invaded at some time in their history. England was invaded by the Romans, Germanic People, by the Vikings ,Normans, French and the Dutch. I do not support what happened to the Aborigines of Australia when the country was first colonized and I celebrated when they were given recognition and an apology for these crimes. The latest 'Yes" vote didn't pass because Australians finally recognised that we are one country and this vote would have divided the nation and sent us on a backward spiral.

1. Australia Day does not celebrate the arrival of the first fleet or the invasion of anything 2. Captain Cook did not arrive in Australia on the 26th January. The landing of Captain Cook in Sydney happened on the 28th April 1770 - not on 26th January. 3. The first fleet arrived in Botany Bay on 18th January. The 26th was chosen as Australia Day for a very different and important reason. The 26th of January is the day Australians received their independence from British Rule. However, Captain Cook’s landing was included in the Australian bi-centenary celebrations of 1988 when Sydney-siders decided Captain Cook’s landing should become the focus of the Australia Day commemoration. Sadly the importance of this date for all Australians has begun to fade and now a generation later, it is all but lost. The media as usual is happy to twist the truth for the sake of controversy. Captain Cook didn’t land on the 26th January, so changing the date of any celebration of Captain Cook’s landing would not have any impact on Australia Day, but maybe it would clear the way for the truth about Australia Day. On 26th January 1949, the Australian nationality came into existence when the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 was enacted. That was the day we were first called Australians and allowed to travel with passports as Australians and NOT British subjects. In 1949 therefore, we all became Australian citizens under the Nationality and Citizenship Act

Cook was an explorer and an expert mapper. He mapped the east coast of Australia. The west coast had already been mapped and Tasmania was already known by Europeans. Much has been made of the first fleet being invaders. There were convicts who died on the voyage to Australia. Within six months convicts died of malnutrition. Some invaders! As for when we all became Australians, well, Aborigines were not considered Australians until much later than 1948. A referendum was held and Australians voted in the majority to have Aborigines as being Australians with voting rights.

So when Captain Arthur Phillip did this he ended the thousand years, (or was it 75,000? Or was it 125,000?) of pure peace, munificence, justice, tranquillity, kindness, altruism, and generosity that had existed in Australia prior to Cooks/and or Captain Arthur Phillip's diabolical arrival, and proclamation? @@Nahasapasa

I believe my point, and that of reality*, is that tangible history happened. And fairy tales fabrication, idealization, notions, untruth, and falsehood did not. *the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them. "he refuses to face reality" Human history is almost entirely made up of differing groups of humans mistreating one another. Yet finding any specific case of this abounding wrongdoing, to attack a celebration that is inclusive across the board embracing all Australians is clearly self-regarding and malicious. We are here, because history happened. We (all of humanity) are here (wherever we are at approximately this present time) because history (tangible recorded, events took place) happened. Public sentiment momentum is with a date change. It's an inevitability the date will change. It's becoming ridiculous to even try to provide a rationale against that. Absolutely, January 26th is of deep national importance - but surely we're adult enough to work out how to incorporate that date whilst moving the date that celebrates our national identity, too? I really don't get all of the drama here.

Everybody was fine with Jan 26th a few years ago. Moving the date won't stop the activists complaining, it will just change what they complain about. Anyway, I reject the notion that setting up a British colony in Australia was a bad thing. On balance it was a great thing, including for indigenous people, and it's an important part of our country's history.

This is a day for all Australians to proudly celebrate, and throughout my life we have.❤🇦🇺🦘 Why has it become an issue (a grievance)? A radical few who teach hatred, unkindness, and aggression, encouraging division disagreement, conflict, dissension for their own arrangements, and game plans. And they have been embraced by elites who feel their Voices are the loudest so they are merited in their unkindness and conflict. They care nothing for genuine history, or even the cultures of unfeigned indigenous tribes of which there were many hundreds, now only a shadow of recently introduced: smoking ceremonies, ‘Welcome’ to countries, and ‘Acknowledgement’ of Country… factitious plastic spectacles ‘*traditions’ overflowing with nastiness, shamelessness, and complete disrespectfulness of Australia’s European heritage.❤🇦🇺🦘 Australia has spoken, yet we are not, and have not been heard. While this radical few who teach hatred, and unkindness have been given ever increasing power, gifts, provisions, and benefaction. Time for a national reconsideration on the broad rights and obligations of all Australians in Australia, and a re-evaluation of the current preferential treatment, and actions towards Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander’s. Australia must embrace once again national equality, egalitarianism, fairness, justness, and equitability. The moment Australia stepped over the line from equality to a favoured group, we took a massive misstep. We must walk back this shallowness and clear stupidity. Honestly embracing a group's cultural ancestry to such an aggressive degree, and using this cultural ancestry as an excuse, is clearly pretty racist. Equally blaming some other culture, and those belonging to this differing cultural ancestry is clearly and unquestionably racist. Equality, egalitarianism, fairness, justness, and equitability are non-discriminatory, evenhanded, and unprejudiced. The opinion that the colour of your skin, or the antecedents of an individual are the defining factors is narrow-minded, backwards, bigoted, racist, discriminatory, prejudiced, unfair, and insulting. Yet it's been the dominant thinking in the Australian government, Universities, the Australian media, (particularly the ABC) and general public discourse for decades. This retrogressive, confused, righteous stupidity has to be walked back. Australia will be burning witches again if this level of ‘objectiveness’ and ‘honesty’ continues. Bring Australia together. Australia is for all Australians equally, with objectivity, fairness, impartiality, and even-handedness.❤🇦🇺🦘 *only decades old, and established evident: fakery, acts, charades, cons, facades, and deceits.

Again and Again, this has nothing to do with the Labour Party or woke or Indigenous affairs! Please stop using woke and or Indigenous affairs as an excuse to fix our Australia Day! Are we Australian or British? The 26th of January is not our National Day! This is called "Australia Day" but never called "Australia National Day"! Why? Because Australia Day was set up when Australia was a British Colony, and of course, it couldn't be called "National Day". The 26th of January is a colony day! Australia is now an independent nation! Australians deserve a proper "Australia National Day!" This is to make sense of our Australia Day! Doesn't it make more sense for Australians to celebrate Australia becoming a nation on Australia Day, rather than celebrating GB started colonizing this continent? Your theory said law, order, democracy, skills, etc. start coming to this land on 26th January 1788 is misleading! No doubt many immigrants bought in skills and knowledge after the 26th of January 1788. But in general, colonization wasn’t to develop a modern and advanced society to a land. Colonization aimed to get resources from the land like the Vikings! Not all colonies ended up free, democratic, and became a nation! 26 January 1788 had nothing to do with Australia becoming a free democratic nation! It was on 1 January 1901 when six British colonies-New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania-united to form the Commonwealth of Australia and established the foundation of a nation. Australia Day on the 26th of January is a bug and needs to be fixed by politicians!

From Wikipedia, Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. Observed annually on 26 January, it marks the 1788 landing of the First Fleet and raising of the Union Flag of Great Britain by Arthur Phillip at Sydney Cove, a small bay on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour. The name Australia Day and the date of 26 January finally was selected in 1935. I guess this was a coincidence with the Australian passport issued for the first time. @@johneducatemyself5249
