Governments congratulate themselves every time they waste our money. They have photos taken, dressed in brand new work clothes and say"look what I built". They should show up in their suit, surround themselves with the builders and express their appreciation. What we have are actors that couldn't get a job on Neighbours.

What about the 100's if not 1000's of private colleges that have nothing but international students? Some colleges have upto 8 campuses around the country in strategic places to take advantage of regional fasttracking awards to permanent residency and have up to 10,000 students in all campuses, 100% are INTERNATIONAL students in a closed almost un-policed, and rubbishingly regulated incompetent agency in ASQA. All these students work 2 jobs, 1 of TFN for their allowed 24 hours a week, the other job is via an ABN sole trader where they work for uber and even places like Australia Post as a second income as a way to subvert the working 'hours' limit as ABN invoicing can just show a total for job done, regardless of hours. I have many students doing this, all sending 40%+ of what they earn here, back home to support their family, many with children at home with grandparents. 20% are good productive students that may be worth keeping in the country. The rest are here purely to work and send money home to support their family's!

We have too many Universities and the last thing this country needs is more degrees and Uber drivers. Fund TAFE and move all these health and arts degrees like Business, Nursing, Radiography and “slap and tickle” aka Physio which are really vocations) like back into 3 year diplomas. The argument for turning these vocations into 4 year degrees was that graduates weren’t job ready. FFS what graduate is job ready? It’s only once you start work you become productive. Yet again, Aust government pandering to lobby groups and addicted to the juiced up demand it creates. Tail is wagging dog.

The student visa should only be for the student, no family. No pathway to any other visa. The students should have to apply to the Government for visas, not allow the universities to dictate the immigration process. When they finish their course they go home, no visa to return to Australia for 3 years. International students must pass IELTS exams held in Australia to graduate.

International students at universities aren't the main problem. There are so many private "institutes" that basically act as student visa factories for people from 3rd world countries where 100% of the students are international. And they're not even learning anything! They literally just pay their fees and then go work for the 20h/week they're allowed to and then do Uber Eats or work for cash in hand the rest of the time.

Australian uni degrees will become much less valued overseas if standards are thrown away for cash. An example is Saudi Arabia where their government pays for their citizens to study Nursing at Sydney Uni and pay double the standard fees so are a cash cow for the uni. When the graduates return to Saudi to work in hospitals some can't even do the basics as they've been passed all the way through even if they've not attended classes. The end result is Saudi hospitals are much more wary of employing a nurse with an Australian qualification. Obviously some are good students who work hard but they get the same piece of paper as the ones who didn't.

if we understand incentives, we can determine the outcomes BUT there are unintended consequences quite perverse. 1. what groups benefit most from escalating house values? 2. what impacts does immigration have and does it correlate to 1.? 3. is inflation the key driver of home builders collapsing and does it relate to 1 and 2?

There is a massive number of international ‘students’ applying for visas to work while ‘studying’. This directly takes Australia jobs from our own students and graduates. This exists in our biggest government funded industry - infrastructure. All major infrastructure projects is riddles with international ‘students’ who are both lacking any fundamental knowledge and taking viable jobs from Australian citizens. The UNSW is one of the worst. They have an Iranian running a graduate program with road infrastructure that only promotes Iranian students.
@DanWheАй бұрын
Want to reduce inflation. Stop wasting tax payer money. Best way is to stop immigration, stop ‘social welfare’ spending (social welfare is equivalent to feeding wild animals, they become dependent). And massively raise the tax exempt threshold to something significant (at least $50k). And most importantly reduce government and demand resources to obtain more significant sovereign benefit. Also, include housing in CPI calculations, especially as it is a primary everyday expense, and we know this because they use interest rates to control spending!
