There is a caveat to the "both types get top scores" thing. If your kid is really smart, they will do well in either system. If your kid is dumb, they will do poorly in either system. But for the average kids, the ones in the middle, they will generally do better in a private school than in a public one. This is because of the distribution bell curve. Someone in the 95th percentile will not move their relative position much by changing a few marks here or there because the candidates at either end of the curve are more spread out in terms of scores. But someone in the 50th or 60th percentile can get ahead of thousands of their cohorts with just one or two extra marks. Since university entrance is determined almost entirely by a student's academic ranking, for those kids near the middle, one or two marks on their final exams can be the difference between getting into tertiary education or not. There's also a curious effect observed in a sub-type of private education: single-sex schools. If your kid is female, she will not statistically do any better or worse in a girls' school. But if your kid is male, he will almost do better academically in a boys-only school (though social development may be another matter).

There is no such thing as "a dumb kid." Those "dumb kids" aren't as diligent as the smart ones. At the end of the day, what ever you put in to school, that's how much you get out-Mikail

Great debate, well done. I went to MLC. I excelled at Music so this school was perfect for me. Academically, in my opinion, I would have achieved the same if I went to the local high school. I believe the decision to go government or private is purely a family one taking into account the learning preferences of your school aged students and what the schools have to offer. My two children went to Scotch and Strathcona - perfect for them. Thank you for your considered words of wisdom.

For two years we had one child in a public (secondary) school and the other in a private (secondary) school. The biggest difference was the constant communication from the private school. There would be emails or circulars updating about events. If you did not tell the school the child was sick, the school would phone before 10am to find out where the child was. In addition, every emailed query I sent was responded to within 24 hours. The private schools can afford the additional staff to provide constant feedback about the child, the class events, and questions. In comparison, there was silence from the public school, apart from the weekly bulletin. None of my emails were ever responded to. Parent/teacher interviews were the only interaction. It was the best public school in our region of Melbourne and hard to get into, but public schools cannot afford the additional staff to provide the communication we experienced from the private school. The public school was an excellent school. We just did not realise how much the private school spoilt us with constant communication.

There is the mid tier of private schools ...the Catholic school system and they are not in the 10K upward range...in fact if you get in they have to allow your other kids in and usually after the 2nd kid (if you have three or more) the third one is free :-) Catholic schooling is around the 5K mark...which is affordable to a lot of families.

Im ok with my kids learning about other religions...even in public school. I signed them up to a religious class every term. Im a animist...I like them to have a healthy overall view of religion and they can make their own minds up. IMO good parenting will overrule any "indoctrination" My kids attend Catholic school because the public school system in my area was failing the kids and the discipline was almost non existent. I have not regretted that choice.
@2LegHumanist6 жыл бұрын
The problem with that view is they're not learning "about religions", they're getting religious instruction. There is a big difference between religious education and religious instruction. Religious education is taught objectively and includes multiple world religious. In religious instruction, you're taught that the beliefs of one religion are true. The Australian education systems misuse the term "religious education".

We did the mixed education. Public for primary and private for secondary, however our local public high school is also a great school. For us it came down down to pure convenience. The private school is within walking distance where the public is not. Because I live in an area where trades are just as valued as degrees - our schools also have great trade schools within them - both public and private. So the kids graduate high school with a lot of credit towards trade apprenticeships.

My children both went to State co- educational Schools in Primary & Secondary. When my son went to university QUT he said the first thing that was SO NOTICEABLE was you could tell immediately in the lecture hall who had attended a private single sex school,and who had not. Those who had attended Co - Ed schools were not failed by someone of the opposite sex sitting next to them in the lecture theatre. AND as he was doing science he was surprised how many had NO IDEA how to work around and use equipment in the science labs. He had learnt all the basics at his state high school

One thing that has not been mentioned is the simple fact many private schools, like Kings & Scots, began to provide a good education for the children coming from very isolated stations. Many of these children do distance education through primary then transition to a private school for high school, one reason being many of them are boarding schools. Almost all private schools offer smaller classes so children get far more one on one instruction & a child having difficulty with a subject is far more likely to be identified & get extra support.

Australia's most expensive school is Geelong Grammar. Full boarding for students in years 10-12 is $66,000. For day students it’s $39,000. Notable Alumni: HRH Charles, Prince of Wales. HM Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, King of Malaysia. Rupert Murdoch, media proprietor. Kerry Packer, media and gaming tycoon. If you could afford to send your kids to this school, and they got good grades. Potential employer would take note. And yes they do except international students.

It's less about the school, and more about the child. Some children do really well in private schools, others do far better in public schools. The school culture of private vs public is quite different, and that makes a huge difference to the socialisation of the children at school, which has a huge impact upon how well they learn. That's why there really is no solid way for anyone to say one is better than the other, because what is good for one child may not be good for another.
@johndrum66136 жыл бұрын
Guys. Great to see you putting yourself through the process. The only outcome of all this is that the kids will grow to be who they are. If a kid is raised on social privilege and attends a Private school like MLC the Christian thing goes out the window and these people just perpetuate social separation. If you kids are raised on the egalitarian principles then no matter wher they go to school they will be fine.

Woh MLC right to the big name school. The issue with the Categories is the variation in Public & Private schools can be massive. Private vs Public does not dictate quality and resources. Soo the end result is you just have to research the Specific School you send your child to.

Catholic primary and high schools in Melbourne do not compare to other private schools. I have gone to a catholic primary school a while ago, and when I went to a public high school and I found that it is sooo much more welcoming and there were even better facilities and my test results and grades went up.

Mine went down! I had been at Catholic school from kindergarten and was in the top five of my class each year, but in high school, it was closer to attend the local public high school, so I went there. But three weeks into the first term, I went to my parents and said, “Please! Get me out of this school!” So then I enrolled at the nearest Catholic High School which was 20 minutes away by train. What I was missing that I was so accustomed to, was the self-discipline! These year 11 students showed none! They were talking over the teachers, answering back (a huge shock to me), throwing things around the room and not doing any work. By the time my parents got me enrolled into the Catholic high school, I was four weeks behind and had to work extra hard to catch up!

i know this video is old, but a lot of parents choose private schools because the school size is smaller. Even tho a lot of parents aren't religious, they will join a church just to have their kids join a religious private school because the school is smaller and is more capable of controlling bullying and toxic behaviour. Some private primary school fees are as low as 1.5k a year. Also in Australia, it looks good on your resume if you went to a private school. Connections through private schools are the reason why so many of the rich are rich. The private school culture is that they keep it within the "family" of their school. Networking. Look at the liberal party for example.

Thanks a lot for this video. It was extremely helpful. How do the co-curricular activities compare between the public and the private school system?
@traffordsec43223 жыл бұрын
The extra-curricular activities at private schools are usually more ambitious which incur greater costs. E.g. a public school in Sydney may have a skiiing weekend in the Snowy Mountains (6 hour drive away) where a private school may have a ski trip to Europe/Japan or have a whole school term at the facilities they own in the Snowy Mountains.

@thegreatbeyond57898 жыл бұрын
Hey marco, thanks for stopping by! Great question. It's similar as the US, where different areas have different requirements. But in general it is recommended, but they can't reject any child that's unvaccinated. (Although kindergardens almost universally reject unvaccinated children). But they do have a new policy come into effect that you can't get access to many of the social support programs for children if you haven't kept your children's vaccines up to date.

With private schools there is the idea that it's about who you want your child mixing with. However, if there were no private schools those same kids would be meeting in public schools. So if people were being really honest it's about who you don't want your child mixing with, and that's what does the damage in the community. We should do what Finland did.

It's true that more private school kids end up going to university, but it's also true that the state school kids who get in kick their arses academically. Australian private schools don't produce independent thinkers who can stand on their own. Instead, they produce coddled and entitled university students who don't perform.

and you went to a state school.....it doesn't matter what school you went to but rather your character and work ethic that you have. The schooling system debate in Australia is divided between people like yourself who are hung up over the fact they can't afford private education and people who can afford and choose to provide it to their children. Ultimately all students sit the same exams at the end of year 12 or IB!

I live in Tarneit Suburb but did not hear any good reputation of any public school. I am really unsure about the Australian education system. My son is in grade 3. Does public schools quality differes as per suburb. I mean the individual attention of teachers on kids and the facilities provided. Please suggest.

As an educator, I suggest having a look at the myschool website. It will give you an idea of the academics based on the national testing, the socio-economics of the families enrolled, lots of key information for making a good decision. Yes, I would say school qualities differ, not just private to public but depending on the administration of the individual school it can be different from public to public aswell.

Scandalous behaviour occurs in all types of schools. Difference is that anything at all controversial that happens in private schools, especially the uber elite private schools, is automatically front page news, whereas when the same thing happens at public schools it isn't even considered newsworthy so it make it into the headlines.

Perhaps you know better by now, but for this video, you missed the most important and substantive of the private schools, the Catholic Education system, which follows the government curriculum, is the second highest educator of Aussie kids, plus the students live the Catholic faith every day at school. I grew up in this system and it was for all Catholic kids from kindergarten to tertiary education. You can read about it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_education_in_Australia Each Catholic school, whether primary, secondary or a combined college of both, is attached to the local Catholic parish and teaches high moral values, service to others and education in the faith, as well as the regular academic subjects. If you can’t afford the fees, you can discuss it with the parish and they will work something out, because living the faith is something the children need and won’t get in a public school.

Home schooling is not popular in the major cities and coastal townships (which is where most of the Australian population resides and there is usually a school in walking distance or short bus ride from their home). Regional and outback is very acceptable to home schooling due to the vastness and remoteness of the properties. I'm not sure about other countries but a lot of outback children study over radio waves (ie a teacher teaching a whole class over a two-way radio) and the childs mother acts as a teachers aid. Hope this was helpful 😊

I go to a private school and today, because of corona virus, we are continuing with online schooling. I forgot to click in the poll on the top that marks our attendance and as a result, both my parents and I got an urgent email... like. Why?!?! There are also lots of rules. We must wear the winter and summer uniforms accordingly. Dresses have to be up to out knees, we can only wear the white socks and boys have to wear the grey socks and they have to be the right ones. Girls have to tie their hair up unless their hair is shoulder length and boys have to have even hair. Everyone has to tuck their shirts in and we are not allowed to zip our coats all the way up because the teachers want to make sure we are wearing ties. We aren’t allowed to have nail polish, anything else from plain silver or gold earrings and of course, no make up. Girls can only tie their hair up with blue, black or brown hair ties and we have to wear the right socks according to the daily schedules and seasons......

If you live in a rough suburb in Australia though guess what so is the public school. They can be really dangerous some of them. Rapes and violence happens a lot. This doesn’t happen in private schools. So sure go public if you live in a socioeconomic well off region.

Yeah it's true, violence is not limited to public schools. Violent tendencies don't eventuate because of the type of school a kid goes to. They come about as a result of personal character, home life, upbringing, environment and the people the kid associates with.

Parochial schools in Australia, particularly Sydney or Melbourne are religious in some shape or form. Go to a good public school. At the end of the day it is all about the child applying themselves. Private schools are a rip off whether they be in Australia or USA. I have experience of both. Good public schools are provided both in Australia and US. Catholic schools are average at best.
