Australia’s treasurer will hand down the annual budget on May 14. It comes at a time of increasing concern over cost of living, high interest rates, an earlier surge in inflation and a worsening housing crisis. It all adds up to a major economic challenge for the country's Labor government. But as Roger Maynard reports from Sydney, not everyone is complaining.

State government in Australia is going after foreigners who own property in Australia, slapping Vacant Residential Land Tax in addition to hefty Land Tax increase in 2023/24. I was shocked when I read a tax investigation officer said since the property is not in your child’s name, so even if it is occupied by your child studying in Australia, there is no exemption and Vacant Residential Land Tax is payable. What kind of argument is this? The property is never vacant but essentially occupied by your child studying in Australia. Yet the Tax investigation officer claimed that if you as the owner who do not spend 6 months in a year in this Australia, cook, bath and sleep in this property you own in Australia, you have to pay Vacant Residential Land Tax in addition to yearly Land Tax. Beware of new changes in policies and regulations when buying a property in Australia (Melbourne). Australia welcome foreigners but treat you like an ATM machine. What a joke in this era!
