In February 2023 we completed our first ocean crossing, sailing across the Tasman Sea in a 37 foot Shannon sailboat. Fifteen days at sea, 1800 nautical miles across one of the most notorious bodies of water in the world. This is the story of our voyage...

I was in the Royal Australian Navy and my last trip at sea was returning to Sydney from NZ across the Tasman. This is when I encountered the heaviest seas I experienced in my 10 years in the Navy, our 330 foot Destroyer was thrown mercilessly and we were rolling over 45 degrees. Crossing the Tasman is a fantastic thing to have to done in a 37 foot sail boat, I hope to do it myself some day, Bravo Zulu to you all.

Triple furling headsails. What a sailing monster. You captured the wave height better than most sailing vids. And the creaks and groans below on the audio were much more realistic than most others. Many thanks. Excellent.

@@AllisonandJamesSailing It was the worst storm since the queen’s birthday storm. It occurred on 6/11-12 and produced huge snowfall in the South Island and knocked all power out in the north Island. My wife was on our boat at Bayswater in Auckland and I was delivering a boat for a friend to Brisbane. I actually used a weather service for the first time and they were WRONG - when we figured it out on our own it was to late to turn back. Long story, diverted immediately to Norfolk Island ( with no chart) went around island with soundings to have a tract to follow in the night and waited. Used the island as a shield and went around it as the storm passed- but were under storm staysail for the rest of the voyage. Had I not done that we would not have survived. My boat is a custom steel Ted Brewer cutter - Ironmistress- I was on a Beneteau 39 for that trip. June was late to leave but that’s the way it goes. Again excellent video and narration.

Your film is special. Quite unique. I am a keen ocean sailor and your film captures the spirit and the magic of that amazing environment. I loved how you blended the music with the narrative and simply showed us your challenges rather than sensationalise them. I especially appreciated the anxiety narrative. So many ocean travellers feel that but so rarely is it shared. Well done and I look forward to more.

Been sailing now for nearly 60 years, bar 1 delivery trip from New Plymouth to Auckland, all my time has been in dinghy sailing. In all those years, I cannot remember no 2 days alike, no race the same, or the weather, I guess that's the reason why sailing as a sport for me, has me drawn drawn to it. The camaraderie between fellow competitors has given me friends world wide, sharing the same passion, whether racing around cans or long distance as you have done. Congratulations on a wonderful shared trip and welcome again. Nau mai haere mai.

What an incredible experience. I had to watch it three times to take it all in. Memories of bonding & learning to trust in your boat, your rigging, your sails and the realization that you are actually at the mercy of the magic of the ocean, it was so wonderfully captured on video. I too have been in the galley for a couple of days with the same thoughts as Allison but fortunately came through at the end with a sense of accomplishment and belonging to that special group of "dock rats" who feel more comfortable on water than on land or air.Very well done , all of you. Back in 2018 on a Halleberg Rassey 40, myself, the skipper and a friend of his, we did the cross Tasman passage but the other way. Nelson to Newcastle. The trip took 11 days and we covered 1400nm. From memory we encountered some storm conditions with winds around 30-40 kts and hove to a couple of times to allow us all to get some rest. My own boat, a 30 ft sloop built back in 1974 also did this passage, sailing from Hobart to Opua and return. The trip over took 18 days including encountering a 60 kt storm and 14 days on the return passage. When you are out there on the ocean, you certainly realise just how small you are and how alone. It’s both awe inspiring and maybe at times can be somewhat scary/challenging. But it is nice to know you have succeeded in making such a passage.

I sailed across the Tasman 20 odd years ago. We hove to twice on the way there. (We sailed Brisbane to Nelson). When in strong winds it makes a noise more scary than it actually is. We played loud music. It seemed to reduce the Gale by about 30%!!!

Oh cool! You're the second person in the comments that had a relation to Yaringa! Landfall spent three years there. B&D flew to Australia back in October to go rescue her and we joined them in December to help out. We spent a month with them living on the boat in the yard, it was interesting for sure! haha I grew fond of the resident koala and all the pretty parrots. We were very thankful Bass Strait decided to take it easy on us, especially after reading and hearing about how bad it can get! I guess James is ready to get served one because he's keen to head back for the Sydney to Hobart. So glad you enjoyed the film, thank you for writing! Cheers!
