Hello. I am new to this game, though I have watched the tournament at Potter's Resort for the past three years. Thank you very much for this summary and additional information. It was very helpful. Cheers, from Newfoundland, Canada.

I like both indoor and outdoor. I don’t necessarily agree that outdoor bowling is all straight lines, it really depends on the condition of the green, the height of the grass, the time of the season, damp vs dry conditions and if one lives in the north or south of the Uk but then I’m sure you already know this.

Hello Nige Thanks very much for your comment I will be producing a casting the jack video in the next week or two If you have subscribed you should be notified My main tip is to treat it as carefully and in the same manner as bowling your bowl ie. Use the same body motion and attention to length, Kind regards Richard

Each to their own. I play only outdoors because I enjoy the challenges you describe. However, the outdoor game is spoilt by players using indoor woods outside which reduces the sport to a game of skittles. Some years ago there was a proposal to enforce a minimum bias for outdoor bowls and all bowls would need to be tested to ensure compliance. It was discovered that such testing would take about 350 years there being only 2 testing centres in the UK (only one now). the proposal was naturally abandoned. Sadly the use of straight woods detracts significantly from the pleasure of having a carefully crafted shot removed by a rifle shot that requires a very different skill.

I love it when folk play with straight bowls. They are a liability, they're tracky, tend to rise on weight shots, and are limited in terms of available shots in many circumstances. Only useful for front end players, and only then on some greens. Most good backend players use swinging bowls, and it's usually those players taking you out with a 'rifle shot' using their swingy bowls. If you learn to exploit the limitations of straight bowls, so that you have the advantage when playing someone who uses them, then you might also start to appreciate them more. Of course, if someone playing with straight bowls is better than you, they'll probably still win!
