The fire department of New South Wales, Australia posted a video on Tuesday showing one of their trucks surrounded by a raging fire. The crew was forced to shelter in their truck and used a blanket to keep the scorching air from coming in as the fire front passed through. Authorities confirmed two people had died overnight, taking to 11 the total deaths in wildfires since the beginning of October. The huge bushfires have destroyed more than 4 million hectares, with new blazes sparked into life almost daily by extremely hot and windy conditions in bushland left tinder dry after a three-year drought.

Spent nearly a decade in a fire department. You train for the worst when things are fine, never use the "q" word (quiet), and shove feelings and emotional reactions to the background until you're home and can shake it off or work through it. Also, when you go into burning buildings with just your turnout gear to protect you, a truck is a big step up!!

If you were wondering what happened to these guys: I'm living in it, I just saw one of the guys interviewed on local tv. - He said It was a close call, it melted handles, mirrors, air lines. They managed to get to safety but they had to abandon the truck and hitch a ride back to HQ with media and in one of the few remaining trucks from that division. At least 4 trucks were lost in this particular battle.

The firefighters in this video made it out but they had to abandon the fire truck. When they went back after the blaze had passed the tires were partially melted, the paint had been scorched back to bare metal and anything plastic had melted right off. The fire didn’t envelope the vehicle that’s how hot it was.

honeybunny sugarbear Because they are Fire and Rescue NSW. It is on the video when it first comes up. Watch the video and you will see the logo in the first seconds. One of the comments below also clarifies in words to the effect of “We are not the RFS but Fire and Rescue’. NSW Fire and Rescue are the professional firefighters of NSW, formerly called the NSW Fire Brigade. They are essentially paid public servants and primarily are the urban firefighters. The RFS - Rural Fire Service - is the body of firefighters made up mostly of volunteers.

I grew up on a farm surrounded by the Australian bush, we lived and worked in the bush, after years of living there we developed a Aboriginal mentality towards nature, seeing firefighter drive through a fire and placing their lives at risk astounds me, I know that people who never had the life experiences like me are regularly demonstrating that you are not aware of anything about nature, its not the fires you should fear its you, you disregard your safety, you don't make your property and animals safe, people in charge are being paid a fortune to turn up to their jobs everyday who appear to me to be completely out of touch with reality when it comes to bush fires.

@@drizzypizzman5849 Yes I am, it's frightening to think our fires are as big as European countries. The Navy and Airforce have sent in Black Hawk choppers and the big war ships to evacuate people by sea because they are trapped on the beaches. I think there is about 4000 people to evacuate. We also have Boeing 737 air tanker assisting with the water bombing efforts, as well as helicopters. The Kiwis, Canadians and Americans are here to help. We have been declared a state of disaster

@@tezpa3931 I'm from Perth, fires here are getting worse but still nowhere near NSW. I check the news everyday to keep track of how it's going. Incredible how coordinated the effort has been, reminds you that we are all in this together. I wish you and everyone out there the very best of luck!

Every one of these men and women who fought this hell should have a standing ovation. And what’s even scarier is that one out of the millions of little sparks in that bushfire could start another massive one somewhere else.

This happens every year in Australia. We had a really bad one in 2009 where 179 people died but that was only in one area and state. This is worse because it is in multiple states, areas across the nation and the fires got bad quite early in the fire season. We still have 2 months left of the fire season with Feb and march being our hottest months.

It actually needs to happen every few years (that's how australian Flora is designed) but we havnt managed it properly and instead we have massive fires which kill heaps of people every decade

Scariest thing I have ever seen. Fire not just looks scary but can you imagine the amount of heat it is generating. When I was a kid, I witnessed a nearby big oil storage tank blow up which created a huge fire. Even from a mile away it was so hot we could not stand n see. But damn these these guys are moving through fire. These firefighters are superhumans
