This is true. I used to know an Aussie who lost her white collar job and she was stressing out that her and her boyfriend could "only" have a $20 lunch budget daily and would not be able to buy extra snacks and drinks. "We'll be eating mince every night" she cried. They both made over $80K a year, I made $30K and I ate better because I cook everything from scratch. And she did not even leave her mothers home until she was 36 to boot. I know Aussies with no kids who eat out 3 tims a day, smoke, go drinking every weekend, buy $800 concert tickets, take overseas trips but claim they cannot afford a second-hand car. No, they just put priorities on luxuries vs necessities.

The land lord is claiming my 2 weeks in advance as a non refundable deposit. She has boosted the rent by 20% to ensure we can’t afford it. I’m on a disability pension with a brain tumour and chronic asthma. Gotta love what Asian landlords can get away with. I feel sorry for the new generation because they may never be able to afford a house, or if they do, they’ll spend their whole lives working hard and still struggle to pay it off. In 10 years, fewer and fewer babies will be born as couples won’t be able to afford having children. I am also an immigrant who came to Australia 20 years ago. It’s despicable that the Reserve Bank Governor thinks its ok for some hard working Australians to have to sell their home because they are so fixed on Interest rates as the only cure for too much spending as they see it. Whilst we ordinary folk are spending more for our food, electricity, gas, fuel, rent.. We (the low and middle income) are not spending on new cars, overseas holidays, jewellery etc. this is where the old tax system of higher taxes on luxury goods and services worked better than gst.
