The Kelpie is an Australian sheep dog successful at mustering and droving with little or no guidance. It is a medium-sized dog and comes in a variety of colours. The Kelpie has been exported throughout the world, and is used to muster livestock, primarily sheep, cattle and goats. The Kelpie is a smooth-coated, medium-sized dog, generally with prick ears and an athletic appearance. Coat colours include black, black and tan, red, red and tan, blue, blue and tan, fawn, fawn and tan, and cream (yellow). Show Kelpies generally excel in agility trials. Kelpies are a hardy breed with a few health problems, but they are susceptible to disorders common to all breeds, like cryptorchidism, hip-dysplasia, cerebellar abiotrophy and luxating patella. Their average lifespan is 15 years. Kelpie requires extensive excercise daily to keep itself active.

I recently adopted a kelpie mix puppy from my local humane society. She and her litter was sent to their humane society from Hawaii during the Kilauea massive eruption. Although she is quite the mix of different breeds, the kelpie stands out in her. Very, very energetic, very excitable, normally difficult to train, and needy, but a very funny and happy dog. She is only 8 months now, but she is a very loyal companion.

I wouldn't say they're gentle. They're friendly, but they're also very high energy and quite excitable, so they can be rough with small children. They are sweet-natured though. I've worked at a commercial boarding kennel for 5 years and interacted with ~3,000 dogs. Only ever met one kelpie who wasn't immediately friendly and outgoing (she was a fear-biter). I've met more nasty poodles than unfriendly kelpies.

Poodles were bred as guard dogs. Same as dachshunds. Sometimes people forget this. I've had a couple of kelpies in my time and they were both beautiful, friendly dogs.

True I agree. Kelpies are not for small children. They are tough working dogs that need leadership. They are great for older kids say 12 upwards that can play and not annoy them. I love my kelpies but I wouldn't necessarily have them around very young children.

I know this is a limited market but for a 20 something guy or gal who is dog savvy and into jogging or bike riding, has a big indestructible yard and a ute to drive around in the Kelpie would be No 1 pick ! When not used to the couch! they will easily follow you on a run or ride in conditions that will pull up 99% of other breeds. Keep them on a lead though or once they know they are heading home they will take a short cut across country and be home before you !

We just recently adopted a puppy from a family and they told us that she was mix of German shepherd with Golden. But by her 3 month she doesn't quite have the look of neither 😂 she's looking more like a Kelpie. 😳 No wonder why she's extremely active and we live in appartment. Wish us luck!!

The kelpie instinct is so amazing. Mine has never rounded sheep in her life but she'll stare intensely and chase after other dogs at the park. When you play fetch with her, she'll sometimes run in wide circles around you once she catches the ball.

They are NOT apartment or city dogs, they are working dogs. They require a lot of training and exercise, and would much rather be running around vast amounts of land, working or herding sheep than walking in the city. Thye are cute dogs and I love mine, but think twice. They are extremely intelligent, and will find naughty things to do if you don't keep them busy. Ignore comments on here that say they are lazy or easy to own. They are lying or got lucky.

She may be malnourished. Our was a foster dog that we ended up keeping. I saw a photo of her from when we picked her up the other day and I didn't realised how much she had changed. If her coat isn't full and thick she may need good food. Then her stamina will pick up.

Ha, me too! I got a kelpie when I was living in a rural area, then moved to an apartment in the city. Knowing that all the experts say "these are definitely not apartment dogs", I was pretty nervous. But she absolutely loves city life! She gets two big walks every day, and a couple of brain games to entertain her while we're at work. She really enjoys exercising with me, rather than being put outside to do her own thing (which I used to do at our old home). They're so adaptable, just amazing little dogs.

They're the most intelligent dogs in my opinion, they're so smart, eager to learn and switched right on. They take on clues from your body language when you're training them, it's like after a while mine learnt to read my eyes and what I wanted her to do. I never had to say or sign anything. It feels like she can read my mind. I think they're just so intelligent that they are able to connect with their handlers/owners on a much more emotional and deeper level than any other dog. They have this extreme loyalty and they always want to perform for you, that want you to be happy and they're lifes driving point is to please you. It's absolutely incredible, they have a bit of a cheeky strike with them too. I often joke that my little girl is too smart for her own good. They are sharp and need a lot of mental stimulation as well as physical exercise to keep them in good nic but also to stop them becoming frustrated and pent up with energy and boredom, they can get destructive. My girl helped me to get out of my depression, she would cause such a fuss and annoy me to the point that I actually started doing things, I feel like she knew and wanted to help me.

I got a kelpie out of the pound, I didn’t know what it was when I rescued it. I thought I was some kind of collie mix but couldn’t pin point it. I had him in the pub one day and a sheep farmer told me what he was. He’s very clever, he’s also very clean and loyal. Good breed if you have a very active country lifestyle, don’t get one if you live in an urban area, just don’t.

Kelpies can be prone to hip dispasia. I grew up in sheep country and never met a nasty kelpie. We had ours for 10 years before the displasia got so bad we had to have him put down. Those 10 years were magical.

Re exercise. Yes, as a working breed kelpies need exercise and stimulation. They love to solve problems. However, they also need to learn to switch off and relax. On the farm, they would be crated for periods of the day inbetween work assignments, or they would be chained, however there are alternatives to this. My gal knows when she is inside with me it is relax and sleep time, not play time and I have trained her to that. A good working dog can go from high-activity to a relaxed quickly and appropriately.

We just adopted a Kelpie cross, he's currently laying on my bed snoring (granted we did an fast paced 30min walk, 30mins basic training, started crate training and about an hour of play).

No mention here that there are two types of Kelpie, the Working and the Show or Bench dog, known as the Australian Kelpie. They started from the same dogs but the show dogs have since lost a lot of their natural drive to work stock as this has not been selected for. Instead the breeders have changed the shape and colour of the dogs, amongst other things. The Working Kelpie is often very frustrated in a 'pet' home so the bench dogs are the more suitable pets.

The bench ones are solid colours, but the Shepherd colours are similar to the working kelpie, with tan markings so a bit impossible I think. Enjoy the peace while it lasts!

My Kelpie was the same. I don't presume to be an expert ever. I'm not telling you what to do at all just what I did. I accociated my boy under supervision with other dogs. I mixed his dry with wet until he accepted it. I never give him my food until he finishes his. Probably shouldn't give dogs our food but hey when they look at you with those eyes. If you have a big yard make it more interesting than whatever is over that fence. Marrow bones, puzzle boxes you can buy on eBay...all that. Look I'm not being the KZbin expert because I don't know enough. Just about my Kelpie bestie

Is it possible to take a 10-year-old kelpie who has been a sheepdog its whole life and make it a house dog? My uncle has a kelpie who 'never grew up' and creates problems when heading sheep because of this he is no longer worked and is stuck in a cage with no outlet. I was hoping that I could get a relative to rehome him but I don't know how he would cope. He is a very loving dog and the person I hope to rehome him to likes to go for hikes and walks. So is this possible to do or is it a crazy idea?

Kelpies are fantastic pets, but they need at least two big walks a day with ball games or other high energy activities thrown in. While at home they should be in a safe and secure yard with plenty of other activities that they enjoy while left alone, otherwise, you are in for trouble and asking for destructive behaviour and/or barking. All dogs are a significant commitment but kelpies are working dogs that operate on another level and if you don't have the time to keep a very busy dog very busy, don't go there - get a dog that suits your lifestyle.

@@codyforest3029 as far as I know he was a mostly inside dog but still often outside we have a big garden shed that water proof with carpets and his bed and the other side is my chairs and tables I sit at. I started writing this comment 15 mins ago he jumped over the tall fence into my neighbours backyard they have a dog and I had too jump it and grab him he is very athletic idk what too do? The only way we can stop him is if he's kept on a rope or leash.or spending big money on even bigger fences we rescued him yesterday he is very harmless but very very time consuming I need too keep my eye on him almost 24/7 would it be mean if I were too Tie him up with a light rope too the point where he could just barely not get too the fences we have quite a big backyard and he wouldn't be on it 247 only when we are unable too watch him he's very mischievous
