Randall Waller is a songwriter, guitarist and vocalist as well as Producer and engineer. He has spent most of his career living overseas working with artists like Shania Twain, Keith Urban, SheDaisy and performed in shows with Elton John and the Backstreet Boys. He's played at the Grammys and many other award shows, not to mention the SUPERBOWL, as well as many appearances on Letterman, Leno and other TV specials - from Madison Square Garden to Wembley.
I interviewed Randall in Sydney and had a frank and funny interview recounting stories and antics from the early days playing in pubs around Australia to his later career as a successfull guitarist for international acts like Shania Twain, Kieth Urban, Bonnie Tyler and many more...
Check out his new album "More"

Great interview Gioia and congratulations on 2K subscribers. I was really interested to hear Randall's views on the demise of the pub rock venues in the 1980's. Also how bands back then did their apprenticeship by constantly playing night after night getting better and honing their craft by the sheer weight of the number of gigs they played. By contrast his observations of how current acts are so easily expendable if there is no immediate commercial success was telling. The great thing about the 70's and 80's was that music as an art usually triumphed over music as a business. Obviously there was a commercial imperative but bands had opportunity and that contributed to what was such a vibrant musical scene. I was also sad to see the demise of the GREAT Club at Marrickvllle. My wife and I were there about 6 weeks ago to see Karen Lee Andrews (who was brilliant) but it is (was) a terrific venue that we could ill afford to lose. Looking forward to your next vlog.

One of the first albums I bought was Avion, I LOVED the band. I went to that concert at Lidcombe Oval. Used to go to watch bands at Caringbah all the time, and lots of other venues.

I actually worked in the Harry Sidler building at Milson's Point for an IT company, and about every 15 minutes the rollercoaster used to fly by with screaming people about 5 metres from the window every 15 minutes. It was insane when I started there, but soon I forgot about it. Harry's penthouse apartment was upstairs obviously.

As a compromise bands can use smaller amps. An example is recently they have a clear prospects around the drum kit. We wanna have a beer & a sing along not end up with perforated ear drums.. cheers

Sydney Pub Rock in the 80s was the School of Hard Knocks. You had to be good, or no one showed up.

Now that is definitely a truism...Aussie audiences including me could be a bit harsh but that was probably a good thing in hindsight...Cheers
