Mostly I didn’t mind being called Newfie. But there have been a few times that it got my back up. Newfie’s were the butt of the joke for very long time. So when a man from Ontario said “ So you’re a Newfie ah ! Have I got a joke for you “ I wasn’t open to listening to him. Just totally rubbed me the wrong way. But when it is used as a term of endearment it makes me smile.

My dad who was from Corner Brook and was called Newfie (term of endearment from my mom), endured terrible Newfie jokes from people who thought they were being funny is really shameful. I'm proud that part of my family is from Newfoundland and Labrador, you could asked for a better group of people.

@@deborahcabot3100 I remember the period when lots of Newfoundlanders appeared in Toronto, desperately looking for work because the fisheries had collapsed. They seemed very exotic to Torontonians, the dialect was strange, and sheer ignorance drove all those lame "jokes." Since then, the rest of Canada has learned a lot about Newfoundland and definitely learned to LOVE Newfoundlanders. There is no other part of Canada that has a better reputation for nice people, humour, trustworthiness and kindness. The snarky ridicule of the past has long since converted to affection and respect. Trust me on this.

Back in the 1970s my parents would rent a cottage in a large camp in Ontario. Most of the cottages would be rented by family and friends for the same two-week period in August, so it was an annual event. One of the families had two daughters who played softball. Whenever they'd practice pitching, batting, catching, etc their father would say "You drop that ball and I'll tell everyone in camp your mother's a Newfie". Everyone already knew, but it still got a laugh, especially when she'd come back with something like "Bill, I'll tell everybody you haven't contributed to the Bad Newfie Joke Guilt Relief Fund this month". I like to think that Nfld was the last province to join Confederation because we saved the best for last!

Just an FYI that I joined Kevin's channel on your recommendation (and gave you a shout-out for it). He has a lot of Australian content as well. Great channel! I did let him know that there are a couple of facts in this video that aren't quite correct: 1. St. John's isn't the oldest city in North America. It's Tenochtitlan, Mexico, founded by the Aztecs around 1325. 2. Cape Spear is the easternmost point in Canada, but the easternmost point in North America is Semisopochnoi Island in Alaska. In fact, Alaska is known as the northernmost, westernmost and easternmost state in the US.

The royal Newfoundland Regiment, now a Reserve regiment in the Canadian army. has at least 3 interesting distinctions arising from its service in the Great War 1. it served in the 29th British division for most of the war and not in a Canadian division.. 2. It served along side the ANZACS at Galipoli (sp?) in 1915. 3. To recognise its accomplishments, King George V granted it the title 'Royal" in 1918. This was only the second time in the history of the British Army that this title had been awarded in wartime.

I am a Newfoundlander born and raised, I can tell you I do not like the term "Newfie". Especially when people from other areas of Canada say that term. Newfoundland is a beautiful place with a wonderfully kind and generous people who have a very proud history. All of Labrador and the entire island of Newfoundland are just so amazing to see and visit, many cruise ships visit the island especially the Western coastline. Weather is also much better on the western coast. There is so much more to learn more about England's first overseas colony. Just in case you did not know, Newfoundlanders fought in Turkey(Türkiye), Gallipoli, during WW1 with other members of the British empire, including the Australians. Look up "Trail of the Caribou" war memorials in Europe and Türkiye. Have a great day!

the whole nefie newfoundlander i get the negitive condenation with people using it as an insult of stupid newfie steming from the first world war where most of the newfoundland regiment was wiped out in one day but me i use newfie as a term of endearment its working with what youve got to get the job done ive seen some pretty engrnious newfie fixes but also some pretty dumb ones like when i moved here the back door had two different key sides of a lock and the hot water tap in the shower had a pair of vicegrips on it to turn the tap the broken handle was in two pieces in the vanity drawer i bought a new lock for the front and moved the front lock to the back and just glued the tap handle back together and put it back on. all that being said being here only the seniors have an issue with newfie the young people 35 and under are rather proud well except the ones who go work in the oil feilds of alberta where newfie is used as an insult

My instinct is to say "Newfie" because I love Newfies and see it as a term of endearment, but I've been corrected by ex-pat Newfies living in other provinces. A cashier at a local grocery store here in Ottawa is from Newfoundland. The first time I spoke to her and heard her accent, I said "You must be a Newfie!" She said "Yes, I'm from da Rock and I'm sorry but I hate that term." I was shocked, but she wasn't nasty about it, just letting me know. I love talking to her, because she's a right hoot and a holler!

If you're not a Newfie yourself, then you really aren't in any position to say it's perfectly fine to refer to everyone from Newfoundland as a Newfie just because your in-laws are okay with it. @@RodRuth For years it was used as a derogatory reference as a "dumb Newfie" from the rest of Canada, especially in the 50's, 60's and 70's as Newfoundlanders were not as plentiful outside of our home province as we are today, so the accents, mannerisms even food would be made fun of. I'm assuming you remember the "Newfie joke books". And being original from Newfoundland I get why some people from that generation would still find it so, and I don't think any Newfoundlander is being "overly sensitive", on the contrary I think we handled the low brow humour and ignorant mentality of those times quite well.

And excuse me, but I don't have to be a Newfie to express my opinion based on my knowledge, and experience of my family and time spent there. You don't own an excluvive and censored right to an opinion on the subject. You clearly are one of the "extreme" minority of Newfies to take exception to this harmless term.
